Bucktail3 - BucktailWillie is one of the real experts here on bucktailing the back bays so hopefully he will post in when he sees your question.
Being successful in the back depends on a lot of things, but in general I basically try to go as light in weight as possible - this is based on the noton that back bay fish are often in shallow water and are feeding on the top - but sometimes this even isn't true. For fish that are feeding on tiny silversides or anchovies, smaller bucktails from 1/2 down to 1/8 ounce will work. If there is bigger bait around then sometimes bigger buctails work - but the bigger the bucktails you will often need either deeper water to work or you'll be only targeting fish feeding on the bottom. This is why to a large extent we throw plugs in the back- they mimick the larger bait and stay on the surface in shallow water. Sassys are nice because you can throw heavier, bigger ones and because when they swim they ride higher due to their resistance in the water. You have to play around going back and forth between bucktails, plugs and rubber jigs for a while until you learn which works given place, tide, wind, depth and what the fish want at certian times of day, night, month and year - sounds like alot but it ain't so difficult to figure out and you'll sure have fun while your figuring it out.
