Just got back from Cabo San Lucas, had a great time with my son. Fishing was epic for large mahi but the marlin bite is slow-the slowest anyone can remember. We fished 2 days on Renegade Mike, a 31 Bert. Mexican law says the capt and mate need to be a native, so they ran the boat until we got out and then Mike takes over. Basically we had 2 capts and a mate, plus my son and I can both run the cockpit. They were very knowledgable and worked hard, I would recommend them to anyone. Mike is a ****** who married a mexican lady and has lived/fished there for 12 years, he knows everyone and pretty much everything about Cabo, interestng guy to talk to. Day one we ran to the Golden Gate, tons of life, whales, dolphin, birds, sea lions. No marlin. Picked up and ran to a spot for mahi, got our limit of 2 pp in about an hour. Trolled back to the lighthouse and got our first release, a 120# strippy. Finished the day deep drifting (150ft) live mackeral for marlin. No takers. Our second day of fishing was pretty much the same thing, 6 mahi and 1 stripped marlin, this one 140#. Could have caught 100 mahi, good thing the limit is 2 per person. They ranged from 10-35 lbs.

Enjoyed the town, smoking cuban cigars, will be back.

Some photos (if the fish look small its because my son is 6'5" 310)

Mike we didn't do any inshore fishing, the rooster fish were very small 5-10 lb. We were fishing for Marlin. We paid Renegade Mike $ 500/day for 2 days. He spared no expense and stayed out an extra 1.5 hr both days. Don't use the coyotes, they keep the deposit $$ you give them, usually $100-150. On a $600 charter the boat might only get $450. Most of the Capt. wont go far and wide to find the fish for that money.

Make sure you buy live bait, $3 ea.

If you catch fish many restaurants in town will cook it for you, we went to Maricia Mazatlan (sp.) they did a great job. Most of the bars don't get hopping till after 10.

Sounds like the same bite I had the end of October. Last year was unreal at Golden Gate with Marlin EVERYWHERE slashing through huge balls of bait. Got tired of catching them. It was like bluefishing. This year has been pretty bad.

Try Cabo again

Sorry the Stripes weren't biting while you were there...The Trolling Stones went there last year and caught 35 between 8 of us in 3 days...and per the other reply - buy the extra mackeral before you leave the harbor...don't waste time catching bait when you could be catching marling...great town and nightlife, too...we'll go back someday...heading to Ecuador next week, so stay tuned for a report on that...
