Has anyone tried any of these? I was ready to buy a few Avet SX 5.3's until I stopped at their booth at the AC Boat Show. Their specs are pretty good, light and good looking. Price is really good and they'll give charter capt's a discount on top. You can check them out at www.canyonreels.com.

This isn't an advertisement.....I'm just looking for input.

I'm going to give their little one a try and I'll post a report as soon as I get a few drum.

You get what you pay for... I have no experience with the Canyon reels but they look like the Omoto Pelagics. My opinion and take it for what its worth, I looked at the Pelagic reels which are decent and for a few more dollars I can get an Avet, if something goes wrong Avet stands behind it and will have parts. I am not sure you will have the same luck with others.

Okuma has been around a long time and had a sketchy track record in the beginning, they have come a long way but the memories still exit for those who have had problems with the older models. When you are fishing do you want to worry if your reel is going to break? I dont.

Good luck and please let us know how they are if you go that route. Anything new is a chance until they are proven.

Buy the 5.3's. Avet still makes parts for their discontinued reels and if they dont have it they will load the CNC with the part specs and get you up and running. That speaks volumes considering the bicycle guys will say so sorry. Avet is a machine shop in Cali that did precision work for medical and fiberoptic firms. The 5.3's are under $200 at TD. Quite the bargain for a quality reel made in the USA.

Don is a long time friend of mine and i can tell you he's been fishing all his life and i know he would not get involved with a fly by night operation.

There has been some talk about these reels on a few other boards. Someone has purchased one of the reels and has sent it to Alan T. for evaluation.

Talk is it is very simular to this reel in looks http://www.knkfishing.com/pd-ajiking-pro-jigger-jigging-reel.cfm but it apears to have been redesigned some what, including some upgrades.

I for one am awaiting Alan's grade to see how the reel measures up on the inside..

As far as a reels breaking

I don't care whattype your using they all haqve the potential to break. I've heard stories of okumas screwing up i have two gold 30s never had a problem haven't even needed drags in 5 years. The wonderful Internationals evry two years $100 for new drags. But that is why we always carry extras because you never know when that $800 Stella is going to take a crap. Just my two cents
