On December 31st the back bays and Delaware Bay will close for striper fishing. It reopens again on March 1st.
I want to congratulate all the fisherman who decided to give the back bays a shot and found out how good it can be. I can't tell you how many came in with different reasons why they were going to try it. Some just don't like the ocean or rips. Many don't like the traffic in the rips or the problems that go along with it. Some are beginners who are afraid of going out in the rips and doing something wrong where they screw it up for other fisherman. A lot of people came in to say that they are taking their kids out for their first striper trip and what to make sure they are safe and comfortable.
Quite a few guys like aimeless have mastered the back bay way of fishing and love the way you can factor out the wind and even fog to keep on fishing. Some fantastic catches with big fish have come from these back waters. Something real neat about sitting in the back catching stripers while other boats are running past you to get outside for the same fish.
For 59 days the bay waters will be closed to recreational fishing for stripers but on March 1st it will start all over again. If the winter doesn't kill us and temps hold to the norm then you can count on stripers being hook ready on the 1st. Clam, eels, bucktails and surface lures all work great out back so if you haven't tried it then give it some consideration over the next two months. Five minutes from your slip for stripers can be a beautiful thing.
Way to go back bayers. You had one heck of a run.
