 What a disaster. Called the boat at 6:30 PM to check and see if the trip was still on. Person at the office said that the trip was definitely on. Advised them that we are travleing from PA and NJ and really wanted to make sure that the trip was on. Once again person said that they were definitely going. With that off to NJ to connect with my son. After dinner we hit the road at about 9:30. Called the boat office at 10:00 just to see if a message had been left regarding the trip - their fax machine picked up. Tried several more times will in route - still got the fax machine. Got to the boat at around 2:45. Another person showed up at around 3:15 (also from NJ). He said that he talked to the Captian at 8:30 and was advised that the trip was on. Loaded our stuff on to the boat and hung out. Another 5 or 6 groups show up during the next hour. Mate show up at 4:00 and heads into the office. Comes out of the office at 4:45 and gets on the boat. Minute later I see a guy carrying his stuff off of the boat. Asked him what is going on and h says that the captain canceled the trip. Went inside to speak with the mate and was advised that the trip was canceled at 10:00 by the captain and that we should of called the office to make sure that the trip was still on, but do not worry the captain was giving us a $10 discount for a future trip. Needless to say I lost it.

RIBASS, That totally sucks, I would have lost it also. A ten dollar coupon does not make it right to cancel a trip without notifying their patrons.
thats some bs you should come on my cod trip, jersey cod fishing sucks anyways.
THAT'S BS. CAN YOU CLUE US IN WHAT BOAT/PORT THIS WAS FROM? THIS IS NO WAY TO TREAT A CUSTOMER.
That stinks. Im sorry to hear that.

That said, If it was me Id write the boat owner a letter and tell him what happened. Sounds like you did due dilligence before heading up there. My guess is some serious miscue between skipper and his crew and the answering service.

I'd give the owner or manager a chance to make it right by you, whatever that is. I know these guys rely on repeat business.

I fished up there a few weeks back and we had a tough day, but the skipper and crew worked hard for us anyway. Definately write the boss a note and see what he says.

Winters a tough time for all.

I just read on another forum's advertisers running reports. It sounds like the boat that did wrong by you is saying it was the phone company's fault. There were lines crossed or something like that. That is why you got their fax instead of a recorded message about not sailing. Their website also went down. That's their story and they are sticking to it.
VooDoo Chile can you let me know where that post I would certainly like to respond to the telephone being crossed and causing the problem. If the trip was really canceled at 10:00PM why did the mate show up at 4:00. Furthermore why did the mate wait 45 minutes before coming out of the office to advise everyone that the trip had been previously canceled. Complete BS story and I am not buying it for one second.
That sucks, they should have a least give you a 50% off or better a full fare coupon towards next cod trip. Thats the bad part about going fishing somewhere far away from home. A buddy of mine was out in Montauk last week and some of the smaller boats turned away their customers to the Viking Fleet because it was going to be nasty out there, they sailed but came in early from bad sea conditions, it had to be bad for that boat to come in early. It could have been worse for you if they sailed, taken your money, get beat up and catch nothing maybe. Thats a thing to keep in mind for next time, 2nd options if your going on a questionable day, since the Frances Fleet is the only game in town there's nobody else to go with . I know Eastman's Fleet in N.H stated on their website last fall that if they told you they were sailing that day and you came up and they decided to cancell that morning they would give you a free trip.

If your looking to get out on the cod grounds again check out the post here for another cod charter, there's still room.

Completely unprofessional . Even if they had communication issues( very questionable) it's up to the captain to compensate their customers for their lost time and expense. Bad decision on a number of levels.
how do phone lines get crossed? seems like bs to me

I feel bad for you, I sent Frank and email letting him know of the situation. As long as I have known him he is honest and has been a friend of the Rec Angler serving on the council for years. I don't think it was intentional by any means but I still understand your frustration.

Come up in the spring with Dave and hop on board, he will tell you I cancel in advance knowing anglers time is important these days and there is no need to waste it.

Please do not let one bad situation be the reason to stay away from some great fishing. I wish you the best of luck no matter who you go with.

Capt Dave
cancelled trip

i agree with capt dave capt frank runs a first clas fleet i have been fishing with him for over 25 years off and on he tells it like it is but i can understand how you would feel that is a long ride from nj
RIBASS, just so you know, I'm not taking sides here. I just wanted to let you know what they said. It is a long ride up there. To go all that way and for nothing sucks.

And the following is the copy from other post...

"A perfect storm is what happened over the weekend. A lot of technology that all went wrong at the same time. It is unfortunate that we had to cancel Sunday's trip late Saturday night. As soon as the trip was canceled we took the machine off and started to answer the phone from approximately 8:30 PM until 12:30 am. When the answering machine was turned back on the tape stated that we were not sailing. Not sure what happened but some how between two different phone companies and 5 different phone lines our lines were crossed and somehow a fax line was crossed with our main number. Anyone that called after 12 am got either no answer or a fax machine. This was brought to our attention by customers that drove to the docks after they called. We thought we had made every attempt to let people know that we were canceling the trip due to 30 knot winds. Instead a computer glitch somewhere made us look like we had little or no regards for our customers. I wish I could make the phone company apologize but instead I guess I need to it for them. To make matters even worse we were notified this morning that our web site was down. Oh well. I miss the old days where we had no Internet, no answering machine or computers. We just went fishing

Captain Frank"

Well... seems to me something does not add up. If they were answering from 8:30 PM to 12:30 am as they posted, I really don't see any problem. It does not look like it happened. :naughty:

Been on that pb several times and it is a class "a" boat, captain and crew. They go out several hundred times a year and sometimes, s**t happens. I drove there from blue bell pa for a tuna trip( called all night to make sure it was sailing) and after we got there, the captain decided to cancelled b/c weather turned worse. We could of went but he told us to save the money for next time b/c after tlaking to other captains on the water, not only weather was getting worse, tuna was no where to be found. It sucked that trip was cancelled but the captain did the right thing for our safety which matters most. It's just openion.
