Does anyone know of anyone that will travel to a marina to change cutlass bearings. The boat is in the barnegat area. Also what does it normally cost to have cutlass bearings changed.
Thanks

Most marinas with a repair shop have have a hydraulic press and might charge a couple hundred to do it. They'd be a lot faster than you or I. However, its an easy job if you have tools and know how. I've done it plenty of times. I can give you pointers if you chose to do it yourself.

What makes you think you need to replace them? They often last a long time. If they are worn prematurely its an indication you may have other problems that need attention.

I wrapped rope in the props this year and some of it got in the cutlass bearings. They shafts still dont have much play but I figure it might be worth it to replace them.

Make sure you dont have any damage from hitting the ropes...those shafts should turn with one hand...ideally. Perfectly aligned engines/shafts ect should turn easily when the trannies are in neutral. Make sure your alignment is good or new bearings won't last long. Its generally recommended that you check this annually when the boat is in the water. In fact, with new cutlass bearings there will be more drag than with used ones. Hopefully its just rope pieces just caught up between the rubber in the bearing and shaft...another word of advice...never, ever start the engines on the hard and put the engines in gear. This will almost instantly fill those bearings. They need water for lubrication.

Is there any play in the shaft when you push up and down on the end where the prop is attached?

Thanks for the advice Jackman, there is no play in the shafts just some rope in the back end of the cutlass. As far as spinning one side spins really easy and the other is a little tighter. Its always done that since I bought the boat and I had them check a few years ago. Is that normal, I guess it couldnt hurt to check them again.

it looks like you are already in a marina. Ask them first. the hydraulic puller rig is the way to go. If the guy knows what hes doing, it takes about an hour to do both sides.
It helps if you already have the props off and the shafts clean.
