I was looking at getting a Sage 9 wt. you build'em kit, which would be no problem as I have built a few spinning and baitcasting rods,B...U...T, then I read in a magazine that there are freshwater and saltwater 9 rods. The article said that saltwater rods have a different taper and wall thickness than freshwater rods, so if I was to pick a rod kit to build for stripers and blues, just what the heck rod kit should I pick? I was loooking at the VPS series or the XP series. Any help here?

Capt. Buck,

In general terms, the saltwater blank would be the better choice as it is designed to throw larger, bulkier flys and the faster action helps when casting into the wind. But, I would recommend that you visit a local dealer and actually cast each of the rods. You may find that the medium fast action of the VPS "fits" your casting style and ability better than the faster XP. Just my $.02

Good advice from Logic above...
Building them is a labor of love....and when they break, you can love em all over again!
Have fun Cap! Good to hear from you.
