Its funny that you say that.

I have found just the opposite. The dolphins show up and stay when there is a lot of bait in the river. maybe I am wrong but that has been my observation.

Last year (2009) I found very little bait....but crabbing was ok in the river and there were no dolphins.

The prior year there were a lot of dolphin in the river and the river was loaded with bait...bunker, etc....

Same for the other years when dolphin visit. The food has to be there for them to stay.

Could it be a harbor porpoise?
I am sure that they prefer colder water.
I had one running in my bow wake last April while running along the sea wall by the Highlands ferry terminal. It was smaller than a dolphin, and he was black.
