I like the swivel base type, comes in handy to reload or let unit swing out of way if required. Side mount I like the telescopic poles to spread lines, if your only buying a rigger think ahead . Smaller boats have narrow beams so it's good to spread lines to allow for tight turns etc.

a little more..

scotty makes a very good rod holder mount with swiveling bases.

we have 2 sets of scottys on the hooked up II, both manual and electric.

the only issue with the scottys is the horizontal spool, opposed to penn and cannon which have vertical spools.

the horizontal spools tend to foul if your not careful in deploying them.

we use 200-300# solid spectra or scotty downrigger spectra. the cable makes too much noise.

If you open the telescoping arm and swivel out on the cannon. the swivel will break. Trust me! The thing that does work on the telscoping type is you can put it in the corner rod holder and put the rod in the transom. Since the rod holder on the downrigger isn't really ment to hold a 50tw.
