I just got a circular in the mail from cabelas and they have these reels on sale for $129. I need a new larger spinning reel and was wondering about these. Does anyone have any experience with these? I'll be using it for bass/blues etc..

solid reels with a good, smooth, drag. down sides are they arent very braid friendly, although you can by if bait fishing and you dont overfill the spool, and they are heavy. Not a pluggin reel by any stretch.

Question I would ask is why is everyone discounting these reels 50%? Are they going away? Will it be difficult to get it serviced?

yes it is a heavy reel. but it is bulletproof. i have the 12. for me it is not a pluggin reel, but a boat reel or a reel for a meat stick in the surf. drag is fantastic and the construction is great. would definitely recommend them to anyone.

I've had both the #8...(on my plugging rod), and the #12....(that does double duty on a surf rod and a heavy spinner used for Striper fishing from boat)
These 2 reels are approx 15 years old....(American Made)....and both have worked flawlessly for all those years with very little maintanance. Solid with smooth drags, outstanding reels worth every cent.....

I bought a bigger one for my best friend and he smoke it on a Big King fish,But I think he left the drag tight durring the off season:huh:

Here's the problem--i bought the new ahab 8 spinner for fluke last summer
broke first trip--sent back was told a problem existed with the reverse bearing and pinion bearing---this reel was new in box.
then after getting back and bucktailing fluke reel imploded again...
sent back and asked them to switch with a new cabo --they said yes
fin nor is no longer an american made product! the company who owns them now is wright mcgill--owners of zebco/quantumn and fin nor
i fished the cabo for the rest of the season and had no problems at all
i saw the reels being reduced everywhere and called the factory and was told they are discontinued...too many repairs and warranty claims..
the company plans to re-do the reel and come out with a new version
in 2012.
Now i have 2 american made ahab 20's and i will attest they are bullet proof
i have used them for small tuna, blues, stripers, etc for 12 yrs and only two full cleaning and grease jobs..only one bearing repalcement after 12 yrs and basically that was my fault i dunked the reel at the beach..
the new one's are crap and i'd avoid at all cost especially now that they are dropped.
