My wife and I are finally getting to take a trip down to Hawk's Cay Resort (trip was scheduled for last year and got canceled due to the China Flu). We are going to be at the resort for 5 full days and are hoping to get fishing at least 2 times, if not 3. We both really enjoy bottom fishing and really have no interest in trolling. At the resort they basically control the booking of charter trips from the resort. I have been trying to connect with several captains at the resort to discuss our options (real PITA). Finally after 2 months of leaving messages the one captain called me back and of course he is no longer running the boat that we were thinking about charter. Of course his new boat is more expensive and he basically advised that they would take us out to go Yellowtail fishing and then see what comes up. While catching some Yellowtail would be great, I got the impression that we were being taken on a boat ride.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, respectable bottom fishing charter captain down on Duck Key. Really not interested in booking trips thru the resort.

Thank you in advance(y)

If your willing to drive to Marathon I'd strongly suggest Sweet e nuf charters. I fished with him a couple of years back. I'm sure he'll return your call. Runs a really good operation

Bridgeman - Thanks for the charter suggestion. Running over to Marathon is not a big deal as it is only about a 15 minute trip by car. I have reached out to Capt. Dave for some more details. It looks like a well run operational and the boat is sweet.

I've stayed at Hawks Cay many times - none recent. I have had very uneven luck with the resort boats - particularly offshore. Sock-it-to-em (sp?) was a good local boat. Best luck I had was driving 20 miles up to Bud & Mary's - Some real pros there. Excellent offshore up a bit more at Whale Harbor, but we are talking thousands of beers ago. Anyone know if Woody's still has free pizza?

I agree with you here: Bud and Mary's

We used to charter That's Right, captain John Oughten. He is great. Sometime he has open seats to make up a charter. It's fun place.

Two Conchs are great charter boats, a bit salty, but you're on vacation.

If you look around Key Colony, I would avoid the Main Attraction fleet. We took a boat ride with them years ago.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I have reached out to 7 different charter boats. I had a great conversation with the captain of Sweet Enuf Charters last evening. He actually spent time to discuss our options and had several recommendations based upon when we will be at Hawk's Cay and the type of fishing we like to do. Several other Captains responded to my inquiries and I was not impressed at all. Unless something dramatically changes today I will be booking 2 1/2 day trips for my wife and I on the Sweet Enuf. I can not wait to get away from the new socialist state of Pennsylvania for a week.

Really nice to see that there are a few members on here that are willing to help others. I miss the old BB where we could post fishing reports and people willing to offer advice and help without the fear of being crucified on the internet.

Hands down the best fishing around Hawks Cay is right in the marina. Preferably in front of the "No Fishing in Marina" sign. 100lb tarpon and some of the biggest Jacks I have ever seen. Being an obedient one, this is all based on second hand information... a chunk of frozen ballyhoo from the Marina store is all you will need. And a 50W to stop one before you get wrapped. Damn that was fun. ;)

Bridgeman213 - I was able to get everything line up for 2 trips with Capt. Dave on the Sweet Enuf. Will post some pictures when we get back. Thank for the suggestion.

I'm sure you'll be satisfied with your choice, he runs a clean boat. You'll know what I'm talking about once you get there. Don't know when your heading down but it's great down there, just got back from a week in Palm Beach early this morning.

Was 82 degrees at 9:30 last night when we flew out and 19 degrees when the plane hit the ground at midnight. 2 more years and I have a FL zip code, ain't gotta shovel sunshine.
