Hey folks; New member just looking for some insight on the two different herring runs.I know about the Blackback or Alewife and that they usually come in around Mothers Day. However I don't know much at all about the Bluebacks. Can anybody help me with the when and where of their run.Alewife's have been pretty scarce for the last few years.At least where I usually find them.

I have caught bluebacks (black interior stomach lining) behind North Wildwood and Stone Harbor in past years. Last year was slow for me, but the year before wasn't bad. One year after a mild winter, they showed up at the end of February. If the weather stays good, I intend to look in the next couple weeks.

Can anyone tell me what type I can expect to catch in the Great Egg Harbor River ??
Also what is the best way to rig them for the spring bass run..

They usually run in the same places up the
rivers,it all about timing and the strength
of the run as far as finding them...
Best bet is to just put the time in your
usual spots where you have had success in
the past,watch the water temps,upper 40's
to 50's.When they reach those points its time
to look...

Are you talking livelining? If so, 40lb flouro leader, a 6/0 short shank live bait hook and your set..You'll need a strong rod..40lb class is nice, you can use spinning reels or convential. Convential being prefered. Hook the bait just below the front part of the dorsal fin, take care not to hook em' at or below the lateral line, you'll know if you do that Ouch....
Give the "Go get em'" pep talk and send that sweet striper candy on his way...he'll do the rest

Also, try hooking them in the "nostrils" on the head. Seems to hinder their swimming less for a more natural presentation.
I have caught bass using both methods, try both and see what happens.
