What's the biggest boat to fish offshore - because I'm still looking for a good used ocean liner, or double hulled oil tanker to fish tuna, marlin etc ?

Is a 1,000 footer with 25,000 horse power ok ?

Also, can anyone recommend a good ramp so I can tow and launch.

Thanks

There's a big boat docked along the Delaware in Philly that would be perfect for you. Fastest boat in it's day. I think it comes with the slip.

That boat still holds the fastest atlantic ocean crossing for a passenger liner. Norwegian Cruise line purchased it and is going to refurbish it.

Also the boat can never be big enough cause you will always run into some type of weather where you want a bigger boat.

The fate of the USS United States docked in Philly remains uncertain...

It may not be refitted, and if so, not to re produce the good speed of over 20 knots.

It holds the cross Atlantic record westbound, but not eastbound.
There are now much faster ships, but it was special in it's day, and remains a very sharp looking rig.

Bennett, I think a 1000 footer is too big. You'll need a couple of rest areas between the bow and the stern . After a busy day of fishing a 1000 foot would be a long walk to pull the 2000 lb. anchor and walk back another 500 foot or so to the helm. You would be too tired and that's too much walking. Also the wide load, over the road permit and escort costs for trailering would put a hurtin on your wallet. You should consider a 4 or 500 footer.:D

Hold on guys... I think I have a better boat for you but the sales tax is going to be more since its on my side of the water. It has a couple of advantages over the "Love Boat"...Its has a great slip and a gun if you have a problems with pwc guys or to kill a big shark you hook up. The USS New Jersey... it even has a fresh coat of paint! lol

Thanks guys - your replies are very helpful...........in the finest tradition of Bass Barn - experienced commentary.

I may just re think the 1,000 footer - even though I just looked at a terrifc 1/2 mile long oil tanker that was for sale. Figure I might rig er' up with 300hp etec's..............and have a fine trolling / chunking rig.

How bout a 300x50' flat barge? Think of all the lines you can troll off of that sucka! And with the price of fuel we can all go and it would cost like $25. per man :) . Throw a few sheds on there with couches, beds, bbq's..
Oh, forget about trailering it. Have it anchored in the canyon and transport charters by helicopter :D . Think of all the life it would attract being moored out there. If anyone goes through with this fine business plan, please remember my cut :p . Wow, it's all coming to me! Keep about 20 panga's on it. The crain drops them in and off you go for the daytime troll. 25hp tiller, 12 gallon fuel, 2-4 people per boat. Anyone have the funds to start this? I'm looking for a partner.

Do you remember the barge that was anchored in the canyon a few years ago? There was a guy living on it, I think he was overseeing some type of cable installation. That thing was as big as a football field.

Anyway the barge was there for a while and if he heard you say on the radio you were striking out he called boats in to jig wahoo and mahi.

I think it was in '05.

The is one other small problem your 1000 footer. You would be about 25 to 35 feet above the waterline. What are you going to use for a gaf? A long flag pole? :D Similar problem for the net.

Decided to jump forums and stir the pot. Last I looked there are over 250 responses to your 50lb striper comment.;)
