Some of the 30 class reel are pushing close to 50# max drag! a lot of 2 speed models also available. this means putting the heat on a tuna at 18-22# isnt putting to much of a beating on the reels drag and bearing system. With these modern beefed up 30's, how many of you guys are mix-matching 30lb set-ups with 50lb set-ups in your spread??

for a combined troll and jigging trip, a few 30 avets sounds like a no brainer???

I fish 2 30VSW's and 2 30 Tiagras. Both with 80lb hollow core and 80lb topshots. Plenty of line and 22lbs drag.

The other rods in the spread are 4 70VS's, and 5 50VSW's. 13 total.

AMEN... alot of the time i fish with "green" guys... friends who want a trip out, etc. for people that arent used to the rod and harness, alot of times they end up fighting the weight of the larger reels more than the fish. ive never had anything strip one of my Tiagra 30 wlrsa's.... id fish a 6 30w, 2 50w spread if i had the coin to pick up a few more Tiagra 30ws

When trolling for the 125-175# + bluefin we see on the southern lumps, I prefer to have at minimum 50's and 70's out. We almost got spooled by a 170# fish last year on a 50. Down to the last 10 wraps before she stopped! We did manage one about 145-150# on a 30 last year that ate in the wash with not much line out, so it can be done on the 30's, I just dont prefer them for the bigger fish

When chunking or canyon trolling I prefer the 30's as they are lighter, easier to use and can put a hurtin' on all but the biggest of fish (Swords and real big tunas)

eric we run 3 50's 4 30's tiagra lrsa's with the longrange drags we put 80lb momoi braid with 80lb momoi diamond topshot on 50 and 60 and 60 on 30 s we run little 50's and little 80's. Eric ive fished with penn's avet's and shimano i love the shimano, hate the penn, love the avet but have heard the bearings arent so great.

We have two avet 4/0 2-spd that are great for trolling and chunking. If given the choice, I would probably take the Avets over the Penn 50 TWs. There is still nothing like the sound of a Int'l clicker screaming though!

We run 6 30s (4TLD -2 VSW all with 80 braid and 60 top shot) and 2 50's VSW with 150 braid and 100 tops shots. The 30's are just so agile, the braid backing gives you more line than you would want to reel in anyway.

Save your money, get good equipment with braid backing and you'll never look back.

If not I may have a couple Penn 12/0 laying around should you so desire to haul heavy equipment.:nuts:

BTW - all of the reels(30s and 50s) have upgraded drags.

Depending if I am inshore or in the canyons, I have all 4 (inshore) or maybe 2 (canyons - 30SW) out. If in the canyons, the 50s and sometimes 80s are out. If inshore, I like the 30s (S and SW) and the TLD 25s. I picked up a few 30S -- the non-wide 2 speeds, which are nice smaller reels.

Like Zar said, I like using the tiagra 80's b/c even though they are bulkier, you have more capacity to let out 200-250 yards of line and still have enough left in case its a nice bluefin. With some of the bigger bluefin out there, the 30's might not have line capacity. The tiagra 50W will work too, but I would prefer 80's for the bigger bluefin

i have 2 shimano 30's in the spread only because I havent replaced them with 50's yet to match the rest. I seen a guy on tv land a 1000lb+ black marlin on a 12lb fly fishing set up.......Im not that good yet,I need all the help I can get

50w's. if the fish are running real big we will break out the 80's but on most fish under 200lb you can catch on a 30w. One trick is to turn boat as soon as you hook up to slow the rate of lost line on bite.

Shark Fishing- 2 30w's (fish 30w far and deep) and 2 spinning poles. Also use the Avet LX6 sometimes. We get 90% bites next to boat. So we ususlly are using the lighest tackle possible to catch fish fast.

for bluefins under 124lbs we use 30's ad the ones 125.1 lbs we use 50's if they get to be 162.5 lbs we move up to 50 wides and when they hit the 200.2lb mark we use 80's.


Same with whites, under 50lbs we use 25tld's and over 52.65lbs we bump them to 30tld's :razz:

Would not want to see a nice eyeball hit my 30 .they may be ok on a center console where you get up in the bow and chaisem but on a sportfish the right fish will spoooooool you.
That said we troll 50s and 80s in the canyons.we use the 30s and 50s inshore depending on which fish we are looking at.
