I made 1 out of a metal milk crate and a set of wheels from my grand daughters yard toys, the wheels are about 8" high and 6" wide, it has 4 rod holders and room enough for 5 gal bucket which I use to hold my tackle & use it as a seat and you still have enough room for any thing else like spikes , lunch & etc. keep it light and use the widest wheels you can find. I have also made them out of plastic storage bins, the kind you get at walmart.

Forget about the Harbor freight store down here, they don't carry the beach wheels Jimbo, better search online for them instead....

Since I rarely hit the sand anymore these days, and do a lot of my fishing from piers and bridges, I'm working on modifying a small hand truck with a fold down handle into something I can use.
I've actually used it already, but it has very small hard plastic wheels that just don't cut it. While at Harbor freight today I did pick up a set of 10" pneumatic tire wheels that will be a major improvement, but I'll have to engineer a new axle to make it work. Once I figure that out, I'll strap a couple 1 1/2" PVC pipes on for rod holders, then as before, bungie cord my cooler and a 5 gal bucket to it, and I can carry everything I need for a couple hours fishing out to where I go without having to make multiple trips back to the jeep.....

Beach cart

If you use a Hitch Haul you can bolt your axel's and wheel setup directly to it using u-bolts and plates. Then you can transport your rig by sliding it into a hitch on the back of your vehicle and keep all of the sand on the outside of your vehicle. I have seen hitch hauls as cheap as 59.99 on sale at places like Harbor Freight. They even have aluminum ones if you want to spend more. The cheapest way would be to use a hunk of plywood. I made a canoe dolly out of scrap plywood and it works just fine.
You can "Mc Guyver" one out of pvc but once you start buying all of the couplers you need it will not be very cheap anymore. You can buy an all aluminum cart with wheels rodholders and the rest for 99.00 on sale this spring at Cabelas in Hamburg Pa.

Tackle Direct has an awesome aluminum cart with the big balloon beach tires, rod holders, and bait cutting table sitting in their show room. If it would have fit in the back of my Jeep Liberty I would have spent the money on it, but it's so big that if it did fit, I wouldn't be able to get anything else in there......

Here's what I use.....

certainly nothing fancy, but as you can see, the handle folds down, it's compact, fits in the back of the Liberty with plenty of room to spare, and cost me very little to make.....
