Insulating a fish box?

4338 Views 16 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  bjkgaffmaster
I have a 45 gallon live well that I never use. I would like to use it as a fish box or cooler, but it has no insulation. Could any of you guys suggest how I could insulate it? I have access to all the sides and bottom with 2”of room for insulation. I thought about pouring expanding flotation foam around it, but don’t know if that has much R-value. Is there an insulating board that I can epoxy to the underside that would have a higher R-value? I would like it to be able to keep ice as lone as my heave Igloo cooler, which will keep ice for 3 days in 85+ heat.

i was gonna post this same question. i was thinking the aerosol foam ya spray in around the window gaps at home. i guess the r-value would be on the can. this idea just popped into my head, as i was shoveling snow, go figure
Alot of the spray foam is open cell and will absorb water. If you can neatly glue 2" of Dow Ridgid Blue Insulation,it should do the trick and not absorb water
I dont have any input on building the fish boxes but if anyone needs some of the blue 2inch thick rigid foam R-10 let me know. I just finished doing my basement with the stuff I used the 2x2x96 sheets but my ceiling is short so every piece I hung I have a nice cut off of about 9-10 inches. I probably have 20 2x2x9.5 cut offs. I was gonna toss em but if you can pick em up in Blackwood they are yours to have.

Let me know.

I have tried the cans of foam that you get from Home Depot on the boat before, and it just doesn't hold up very well. I think it is like Get Some said, it absorbs water and then starts to disintegrate. Also the spray foam is not UV stable so it breaks down in sun light. Good suggestion though.
couldnt you just place a cooler inside the box you have.or build a box within the box with insulation inbetween?
How about this stuff, its waterproof

I used a rubber material that comes in rolls that has r value. you can buy different thickness, the thicker the better. I just glued it on, it works great. I will find out the name of the stuff and I will post it. Good luck!
Armacell. I use it glycol and chilled water systems. We wrapped 55gallon drum with it for a party. Ice kept for over a week easy in 90 +100 degree days.
LU# 14 Heat and frost insulators.

thats the stuff i was talking about

that is kinda what I do now, I put one of those cooler bags in it with 8# of ice for the big boy soda, only the ice only last 4-5 hours. I would like to use it inplace of my 120 cooler, so I want to keep as much room as possable.

Do you know where I could buy some from?? I think that is what is on my chillers and chilled water piping.
I believe Armacell is sold by commercial insulation distributors. I had some from a place in Delaware a few years ago. Try starting there
Sorry been away, most likely thats what is in your chillers.
It is expensive,but it works.
You have All state insulation
IMC insulation
KNAUF.
I`ll get you some #s tomorrow.
How thick are you talking and how much material sq ft.?

Happy to help.
Oh PS......

Let me know how u make out.At least the beer will be cold.
Goggle "rubatex" or "rubatex sheet ".
This is also the type of insulation that is installed on HVAC units, pipes and on refrigeration units for insulation.
This material is simmilar to materials used for wete suits. It is weatherproof and I think it is not effected by moisture or by sunlight. It comes in different thickness' and usually in sheets. Good sound insulation also. Easily glued to fiberglass or metal.
The guys from Goldner should agree.
