I?ve been using Kahle style hooks for fluke since I can remember; however, I?m not sure why most fluke fisherman prefer these style hooks. I?ve been using them out of habit. Does it have something to do with the way the fluke?s mouth is situated or the way they strike a bait? What other type of hooks do you use for fluke that seem affective?

Kahles work... I don't know why...

For bigger fluke, I prefer loooong shank 3/0-5/0 stainless eagle claws. (offset)

Good question. I often wondered that. My own experience is the long shanks have more of a tendancy to be swallowed while allowing the fluke to take the bait. The kahle hooks seem to get them right in the mouth. Thwy are shaped a little like a circle hook.

On fluke and swallowed hooks:

My observation of the swallowed hook in fluke is more a function of short bait length and slow drift speed. (Allows 'em to get it waaay down quick.)

Longer baits seem to result in both bigger fish and corner-mouth hooksets.

I'm not the biggest fan of kahles on large fluke as they all seem to be made of thin wire.. I've broken new hooks on flukasauri.

I hate Kahle hooks. I lost a couple big (double digit fish in '01) at the boat because the fish just held on and wasn't hooked. The bait, 5 inch mullet, reversed the point into its body so there was no way to get the hook set into the flounder.

I have switched to wide bend hooks made by Eagle Claw or Sea Striker. I use 1's for big baits, 2's for medium, sometimes slightly big baits, 4's for killies - small compared to pogies and mullet.

The right hook size means more bait action. This is bigger than most anglers give credit to! Ever see the guy with the giant J-hook and a tiny minnow.

I buy the hooks by the hundred. If a fish gut hooks, I snip it and tie on another and hope it rusts out or digests.

My thoughts

What type Mustad?
