If I rig a trolling motor to a kayak do I have to register the boat in the state of NJ? Also can my kid under 16 use it?

Could I register the kayak? Can you have an electric motor on it if it does not have a capacity plate?

If you put a motor on the kayak it must be registered. You will need to go to the motor vehicle with the title (certificate of origin) and reciept. I went with out the title and had to go back to the dealer to get my certificate of origin before I could get registered.

Once you put a motor on the kayak the state now treats it as a motorized vehicle and all its laws

Yes your 16 year old can use it. It will fall in under minimum requirements before having to go through the coast guard course.

You will need to get a certificate of origin like waterbug said from the manufacturer. I personaly never saw the sense in motors on kayaks. I guess I like the exercise..
