I am thinking of making a run up to Montauk later this week.

I want to bring a bushel of fresh clams. If I go pick them up down at the shore any idea on how long I can keep them out of the water, before they start to die/stink up the joint?

Mike,

I am just keeping my options open.

Julians, in Atlantic Highlands, usually has them by the bushel.

BTW, no one has answered by question yet. I thought that there were some knowledgable fisherman on thiws web site :D

Over the summer i kept clams alive for five days. I put ice in the bottom of a big cooler and put wet folded newspaper on top of the ice. then put the clams on top of the paper should stay good. Trick is to keep clams out of the water.

Put a layer of ice in the bottom of a cooler, then add the clams in the shell with the HINGES UP. Stack them in one layer as tight as you can get them, then another layer of ice and another layer of clams HINGE UP and top with another layer of ice. Then, put them where they will not freeze but can drain. Open the drain on the cooler and prop up the other end. This allows the fresh water from the ice to run off and the fresh water will not get into the clams since the hinge is up and the water will drain down. You can keep them for many days this way as long as they were alive and not filled with sand from the harvesting when you get them.

keepin clams fresh...

Just for the record... I definately have a good idea about keeping them fresh....Hinges up and no water in the cooler...Just make sure you prop up the cooler to allow it to drain out of the one side...(where the drain is) and keep lots of ice on the clams.. 5-6 DAYS MAX.....:):):) Good luck!YELLOWTALE:wave:
