Its a terrible trategy, a killer whale @ Sea World killed a trainer today infront of many spectators. This is not the first time, I believe it has happen at least 3 times in the past, once at sea world and several other locations.

But you have to think about it, first, it is and always will be a wild creature. It boggles my mind to think some one would get in a confined space wild a wild animal (especially an alfa female in this case) and try to dictate its behavior, again, its terrible what happened. However, it continues to happen. Confining huge predators in small spaces is going to backfire...it keeps happening:huh:. Gotta learn.

I saw that on the news - the same whale killed a trainer in Canada and then at Sea World they found a dead person in the her enclosure with bites marks on it but the cause of death was ruled a drowning and they could not determine if the bites were postmorten or not. Sounds to me like that b&%tch has a bad attitude. Like you said Fly these are wild animals and we expect them to forget 10s of millions of years of instinct for our viewing pleasure. It is unfortunate the trainer had to pay the ultimate price.

Ever notice that killer whales in captivity always have limp dorsel fins but you never see that in the wild??, frankly having to do 3 summersalts to get a sardine... i would start to get pissed off too, there is just no need for it. Never want to see someone hurt or worse... just a pretty sad situation.

Agree with the above.

BTW the inside scoop says the trainer was walking along the pool and the whale beached itself and pulled her in.
I don't think it is right, they are too intelligent to be made circus clowns...

All animals no matter how domesticated them seem will turn on their master every now and then. Those orcas are very intelligent I know exactly what they are doing. Horrible that it happened in front of a live audience most likely filled with children.

I know exactly what they will do with that poor beast, they will sell it to some 3rd world crap hole of a park and it will happen all over again...

Imagine, living in your bath tube for the next twenty years...sweeeet.

I feel terrible for the trainer and her family, but I also feel pretty bad for the orca. They are THE most apex predator that roams the ocean. The white shark is a tough customer, but it isn't an orca. These animals are smart, form LIFE LONG family groups, hunt cooperatively, and have hunting strategies that are flat out unreal when you see them. From chasing sea lions that are on the beach and having to flip and flop a 10,000 pound body back in to the water, to setting up around an ice flow and knocking a seal off of it, they are amazing creatures and confining one to a small tank isn't going to make it forget 10's of thousands of years of evolution programming it to survive. Some do well in captivity, but some don't want to tolerate it and this is a shining example.

There is no plan to euthanize the animal, and frankly I don't think there should be and I am SURE the deceased trainer would AGREE.

My prayers are with the trainer and her family. Rest in peace.

Unfortunately, the whale needs to be put down. It has killed three times now. It will most likely kill again. We have already f'ed up the majestic creature so it would not make it in the wild where it belongs. It is sad but, it needs to be killed, and, not replaced with another whale. If it was a dog, it would have been put down after the first attack. :(

The sad part is there is not a single documented case of a killer whale in the wild attacking and killing a person. There were a couple of incidents where people were injured after being bumped. etc. - but none killed. This is clearly a mammal that if it wanted to do us harm it could kill people with boring regularity. It is a shame that this whales future is looking bleak - no more shows and you certainly can't turn it loose.

Just heard on the news that the same whale got a 4 year old kid. I dont know if it's old news but it did sound current. They better find a nicer whale.
