Each of us need to send a letter to Acting Governor Codey asking for his support of the STRIPED BASS BONUS PROGRAM. Politicians listen to the public when they get inundated with mail. Let's flood him with letters. Outlined below is a letter, adapted from the RFA letter, which I sent last week , as Chairman of the Pennsylvannia chapter of RFA. Use it as a template and send your own letter. It does not matter in which state you live.

Acting Governor Richard J, Codey
P.O. Box 001
Trenton, N.J.08625

Dear Governor Codey,

There are many thousands of Pennsylvanians who fish New Jersey waters for a very popular gamefish, the striped bass. As Chairman of the Pennsylvannia Chapter of the Recreational Fishing Alliance, I represent those anglers. You have already demonstrated your support by ensuring that we were able to have a striped bass season this year. We would ask for your support again by your support of the $300,000 budget needed by the Division of Fish and Wildlife to continue the Striped Bass Bonus Program.

As you know when the controversy was broached this summer, this fishery generates millions in tax revenue annually and the bonus program is an integral part of this revenue generation.

New Jersey's recreational fishing industry generates over $1.5 billion in economic output for the state. In fact, of the 14 Atlantic coastal states, New Jersey has the third most valuable recreational fishing industry, behind only Florida and North Carolina. However, when ranked by the amount of State funding provided to support marine fisheries programs, New Jersey comes in a distant twelfth. This lack of adequate funding has left the Division of Fish and Wildlife's Striped Bass Bonus Program in jeopardy.

As you know, the striped bass fishery in New Jersey generates major social and economic benefits for the state and, as stated earlier, the Striped Bass Bonus Program is an extremely important aspect of this fishery. Under this program, participants are issued non-transferable bonus cards that allow them to take home one addtional striped bass that is 28 inches or greater. This program allows New Jersey to maximize the benefits generated bt this fishery, and the cards that are sent back to the Division of Fish and Wildlife provide some of the most useful and important data on the whole East Coast for the conservation of striped bass.

I respectfully urge you to take the steps necessary to ensure the future of the Striped Bass Bonus Program. This is an extremely valuable program that cannot be lost.

Sincerely,

Re: Division of Fish and Wildlife?s Striped Bass Bonus Program

Dear Governor Codey:
As one of the million recreational anglers who enhance their quality of life by fishing New Jersey?s marine waters each year, I thank you for your efforts to ensure that we had a fall striped bass season this year. Now, we call on you again to help ensure the future of one of the Division of Fish and Wildlife?s most popular programs: the Striped Bass Bonus Program. Lack of funding has put this program in jeopardy. Public hearings in June revealed that the Division of Fish and Wildlife requires a stable funding base of $300,000 a year to run the program, a fraction of the millions in tax revenue generated by the striped bass fishery.
New Jersey?s recreational fishing industry generates over $1.5 billion in economic output for the state. In fact, of the 14 Atlantic coastal states, New Jersey has the third most valuable recreational fishing industry falling behind only Florida and North Carolina. However, when ranked by the amount of State funding provided to support marine fisheries programs, New Jersey comes in a distant twelfth. This lack of adequate funding has left the Division of Fish and Wildlife?s Striped Bass Bonus Program in jeopardy.
As you know, the striped bass fishery in NJ generates major social and economic benefits for the state and the Striped Bass Bonus Program is an extremely important aspect of this fishery. Under this program, participants are issued non-transferable bonus cards that allow them to take home one additional striped bass that is 28 inches or greater. This program allows NJ to maximize the benefits generated by this fishery and the cards that are sent back to the Division of Fish and Wildlife provide some of the most useful and important data on the whole East Coast for the conservation of striped bass.
I respectfully urge you to take the steps necessary to ensure the future of the Striped Bass Bonus Program. This is an extremely valuable program that cannot be lost.
