Several of the boats i'm looking to buy have mercury engines on them, i'm not a big fan of mercury's from the older models, but haven't owned one in years, are they now a good engine? How do they compare to yamahas and etechs? They are all 2-strokes most in the 150-200hp optimax series and 2002 or newer, hours are from 200-400 hundred hours. The boats are all 18-20ft cc's i'm looking at. What are your opinions on them?

We have been a dealer for all three major brands. The Mercury Optimax has proven to be one of the most reliable brands in the two stroke DI line up. If you had asked me ten years ago, you would have received a different response, but in the last few years the quality of the Mercury engines are every bit of the Yamaha product without the weight of a fourstroke.

In the searches I ran on the different websites, I'm hearing there were some major issues in the early years of the optimax up to early 2000 engines, but after that they got them straightened out. It's just alittle tough figureing out what years they stopped haveing problems. thanks for the input.

I have been a Mercury dealer for over 28 years. Some early Optimaxs had some quirky problems that were solved, 1999 -2001. The 150's really had no issues. Have the motor checked out by a dealer. Then base your decision on that. I would rather see you spend $100.00 to have it checked out and not buy the boat , than spend $15,000.00 and find out you have problems. Its no garranty, but a little piece of mind for $100.00
Oh buy the way we can check out that motor for you.

I will certainly take that advice and most definetly have the engine checked before buying one, your actually in a good location for us if we get a boat with a Mercury we will need local service. our main boat is in cape may, this will be our secondary boat for running around in the backwaters, jetties, and running the coastal waters with, we 'll probably dry dock it in Cape may at our marina, if I need an inspection on a merc. I'll give you a call. I just can't believe how many of the CC's 18-21 that have Mercury's on them it's like 90% of what I've looked at have them. thanks again for your help.
