With all this white stuff flyin' it's a good time to look deep into your crystal balls and make predictions for this upcoming season. Will this old fashioned winter bring some old fashioned canyon fishing?

Will there be 80lb yellowfin in any number?(GOD I HOPE SO)

Will the eyeballs show like last year?

Will the BFT's continue to get bigger down south and hang at the northern lumps from june to november?

My prediction for me this year is that I am going to charter out Don (Bear) for some tunalicious fun. If I am correct his boat is like 60 seconds from my house. Don are you at the end of Radio Rd by Graveling Pt??? For some reason in my head thats where I think you are at but not sure...

But since my winter sea bass trip took a crap this year I would love to get out after some tuna.

Don I will keep in touch for this year. Maybe there might be a couple others who would like to get together and make a nice charter chaseing some tuna around the ocean.

So my prediction is that I just want to get out after some ... whatever. Heck I would be happy to just be out there. I haven't had a boat in years and miss being out on the water. For now my Kayak (outback) loaded up will have to do. But its a blast to fish from, in and around the bridges and up creeks.

We'd love to have you. Don't sweat the sea bass thing either. I can limit you out by noon, if not sooner, most days at the right time of year for very reasonable money. With quality fish..

As for tuna chasing, well you prolly know the deal already. You come to the right place.. Well, it seems the right place came to you... Nice place to live, where you do...

These are my thoughts on this year. The cold weather we have had has impacted the entire east coast from maine to well south of Florida. It has cooled the water surrounding the Gulf stream and the Gulf Stream as well.
I dont think we will see the 80 degree+ water we have seen in the past two years on the west side of the stream. I feel that the yellow fin that were on the East side were there because it was cooler then the West side of the stream and I feel, with cooler water temps the Yellowfin will be back in our canyons like we have had in years past. On a side note if the water temps are on cue with what the tuna like and there are none then we have to look at the west coast of Africa and whats going on there. Massive amounts of tuna are getting Purse Seined there, wanna stop it? Stop eating canned tuna. They use 200 tons of tuna a day in their canneries Thats just Starkist Tuna, they buy Bonita, Albocore, Yellowfin, and Bigeye Tuna From Foreign Fleets. 200 TONS A DAY!!!!!!
so with that said If the Yellowfin and Albocore do not show up this year then we have problems.............

Will the eyeballs show like last year? Yes because fewer boats both recrational and comercial can target them specfically. Allthough the bycatch really did put a dent in them I think they are rebounding

Will the BFT's continue to get bigger down south and hang at the northern lumps from june to november? Yes because of restrictions the fish have a chance at getting bigger and become more pelntiful. Especially if we get other countries to comply with regulation.

I hope we get everything better every year going forward.

I am fishing a little further north then you guys with a slightly longer run out to the edge from Rhode island and Cape Cod, fishing Block canyon, Atlantis, veatch, hydro.

2 years ago (In our area) outside of a good early season yellowfin bite that only lasted a few weeks the tuna bite out at the canyons sucked out loud. Not only was there no good size fish but no little guys either. Late summer and fall night bites were slow to non exisitant.

This past season the yellowfin bite was ok but with an over abundance of rat yellows from sub legal to just under 30 lbs and very few over 30. Every trip i made yeilded more rat yellows then you could take but very few of any size.

I am going to guess that if we see a yellowfin bite in my area this season, the fish will be mostly 30 to 50 lbs and in ok numbers.

Just as important is I am hoping for more fishable weather for 2010. This past season (09) the start of our canyon season was blown out with constant low presure system after low presure system moving through. Then the last month was no better with only narrow weather windows that seem to be slammed shut or narrowed to less then 24 hrs at the last minute. Any thing short of a big down east boat was stuck at the dock.

Oh ya lets hope the weather forcaster are a little better at doing what thier job title implies. Can't tell you how many times this past season i heard "The weather man sure blew that forcast"

i remember when...

Man im only 31,but i remember 1 summer in I think it was 95 where me and my father we fished the cigar and the bfts were swimming around it like crazy,and i mean they stayed there for a while.That was the best time of my life,we didnt have a clue what we were doing and we were catching Huge fish.Last year was my first year back in the "game" and i was like where are all the fish lol.It was the first year with my own boat and guys in my marina were sayin "where you going"and i would say "tuna fishing" and they would laugh and tell me dont waste my time.I got news for them guys in Utches, this year there going to ask me what im fishing for im going to say SEA BASS ,then im going to drag my BFT"S and YFTS right across A & B dock lol nah just jokin guys. I hope we have a good season,i hope i see them dragging theres.

Mark this as these are my sincere thoughts

Here's what I think:

I think the weather is going to be hairy in the earlier part of the season, only allowing the biggest of our brothers to fish even they will be inconsistent.

I think the early bite with be tuff this year.

I think we will have a legit chunk bite, mid late season. As well as a better YF season than 08 and 09.

I don't think marlin fishing will be as it was the past two seasons.

I think the Southern canyons will light up this year, out shining the Northern.

I am think we will see several BF over 73 inches, this year.

I beleive Makos will be late.

Mark me, how it is it I think these things? No idea, either trending and/or fish sense..

If we can't get our boat in the water due to an trim unit issue....the offshore season willbe EPIC and it won't even be beyond 30 miles 200# YFT at the NE Lump, 150# bft at the ww reef....300# Makos 2 miles off the breakers....

All IF we don't get our boat in the water

If we DO get our boat in the water...won't see a tuna within 40 miles, mahi will be non existant

I'll blow a motor or gear box, and there will be YFT jumping in peoples boats. Or My boat run fine all year and we wont see a legitimate chunk bite again.
