Can't comment on the Cedros, but I firmly believe the $100 Battle to be the best value in the reel market.
4th season and haven't had any problems with my cedros. It's caught everything from albies to yellowfin. Found both have had some problems just as any reel does while I was researching. Also, found that both have improved Customer Service since the old days. I looked at the spinfisher v while I was at BPS in FL last week but that thing is kind of heavy compared to others specifically 9500 and above models.
I have the battle 4000 for light tackle... can't beat it for 100 bucks.. 3rd season and it still works fine and I am brutal on my reels..it will handle anything you'll find in the bay.
Return it and get a Spheros. Unless you want to buy another reel in a year, then keep the cedros or return it for a battle. It will help the economy anyway...
this is my second season with the battle on my surf set up, i like the line lay, it cast well, its durable, but after a couple dozen bass the reel makes a grinding noise when reeling slowly (probally the occilation gear) its never been dunked or dropped in the sand, and i take care of my gear rinsing with fresh water, greasing and storing properly.

im not impressed with the battle.. and will be returning to my go to brand shimano when this reel shits the bed.
I thought we were talking about the okuma cedros pole. Lol. Im not a person to drop a G on a bait pole but for a pole that throws 3-8 the cedros is lighttttt. Like it. I have a battle 6000 on that pole as i own 3 battles. 2-6000 and 1 5000.

That grinding noise happened to 2 of mine and other battle owners also. When you take it apart u will see a spring that came unbottoned

I agree, learned the hard way, rather shell out a couple more bucks and get what I know will last! Just my own opinion. Saltwater is brutal on reels and have switched almost all my gear over to shimano.
there are a lot more old penns still being used then old shimanos.
If it's just between those two, I would go with the Penn. At least you have a shot at getting it fixed in the event it breaks down. You have absolutely no chance at getting an Okuma repaired. And no matter how careful you are, reels break.
i fish the 2000 and 3000 battles on all my backbay setups their the perfect reel for small plugs and plastics back there for bass and work just fine bouncing bottom for flounder.
Penn Battle without even giving it a second thought.

Yes... but this is not an old Penn, this is a NEW Penn.... and there is a difference.
My 2 cents,

I have both reels both work fine BUT the Penn works better, better drag & service is excellent. On the other hand getting service from Okuma was horrible. There drag wasn't as good as the Penn's. Talked to there "Tech", yeh right. I knew more about the parts I needed than he did!!! Stay with the Penn.

Key word being old penns. Not the new ones.
