there are a lot more old penns still being used then old shimanos.
I bet there are a lot more old Penns still being used then new Penns
There's a reason why Battles are under 100$. Go Shimano, not that I haven't blown up a Stradic or two but they are by far better permorming spinning reels.
That grinding noise happened to 2 of mine and other battle owners also. When you take it apart u will see a spring that came unbottoned
I think I might have the same problem. The noise doesn't seem to be effecting anything other then the fact it doesn't as feel smooth. What does this spring do and what is the fix?
2 weeks ago got a 20 inch striper. last week some up to 8 pound blues. my new penn battle 4000 handled them very well. drag tested nicely with those blues. pleased with this reel.
Looking to purchase the Battle but not sure if I should go with a 4000, or 5000. Using it strictly for stripers. Don't like a spinning set up for fluke. Any feedback?
Between Penn and Okuma, go Penn. But not doubt shimano is the king of spinning reels. Dont believe me? Go to west marine where they have the reels mounted on those handles where you can play with them, pick up a penn and crank it a few times, then pick up the shimano. I was farting around one day this winter and did this, I was blown away.

I'm using 6000s for Stripers, 99% on chunking and bunker snagging/dropping.

If you're looking at doing a lot of plugging, then go with the lighter reel, otherwise I'd say go with the 5000, if not the 6000.
Just loaded up my new Battle 2000 with 15Lb power pro. Plan to use this on a 6' med/fast rod for LTJ schoolie stripers. I have a 3000 on a 6' 6" med X fast for LTJ when stripers graduate :D
I have one Okuma Trio (one of their more expensive reels) and the reel is ok. It handled big carp and some blues well, but it started making a grinding noise and was not very smooth to begin with. I use a lot of Penn reels, and love the service but the Stradic I purchased last year is by far the smoothest reel I have ever used. Unfortunately, I can't speak for the drag on that reel yet
I have okuma cedros 14k and penn battle 8 k ..both nice but penn is much better ..I vote penn battle 3 :)
