Zar, the Gap is 2 1/2". As for diameter,if you look the hook is actually forged stainless. My guess is about 1/4" flat X 3/8". Also a clear polytube hookguard is used that keeps the hook from 'grabbing' someone. It stays on the hook so it's unlikely to get lost.
