Shut the door to the store at 5:30 and headed out in one of our rentals. Just pulled out off the fuel dock at Schooner Island Marina for a quick hour of flounder fishing.

This has always been an early season hot spot but so far this year it's been picky at best. I figured I'd give it a shot since the flounder seem to have turned on the past few days.

It was wind against tide at the end of the outgoing. Kept running the motor for a slow drift and picked up three keepers from 17 to 21 inches with two shorts. Hope the bite stays active this time.

...BTW....How deep was the h2o you were getting them in?...Do them rentals have depth finders?

Well Fred, my fluke skunk ended this morning the same way... ran over to Somers Point early and the fuel dock was not open yet so I dropped some long mack strips down in 7' of water, muddy bottom, and put some real nice flatties in the box.... trimmed down the bucktail to the hook, just like some famous fishing show guy showed me at an RFA meeting..... Thanks for the tips!

Way to go Fred, let's hope its the start of some good backbay fishing. I wasn't able to make the RFA meeting, would ya mind giving a quick briefing on trimming the bucktail to the hook. Appreciate the response and enjoy reading all your informative posts.

Fished in about 15 feet of water. Tried again the next evening and picked up three more keepers in an hour. Caught almost all my fish on frozen Shiners.

I trim the hairs back on my bucktails to about 1/4 inch past the hook. When the bite is slow I use a small piece of bait and I do better if the hairs aren't hiding the bait.

The white head and short hairs do enough attention getting. I want the fish to see the minnow, shiner or cut bait as soon as possible.

We have 17 foot Carolina Skiffs that are perfect for the back bay. They won't win any races but man are they stable. We have 9.9 four strokes on them and they run $65.00 half day and $110.00 full day.

These will be perfect boats during the Fall striper run in the back. Some clam bellies and an anchor and you may forget about the rips. Boats will be in the water until Christmas.

The shiners have spawned in the back. I pick up a bunch of babys with my drop net every pull. This looks like a banner year for the silversides and the flounder seem to want them more than minnows right now. If fishing is slow try the shiners.

Fred, does NO BONES rent crabbing gear, as in trabs and nets?

Would love to some half-day crabbing, probably in Aug / Sep.
