This past week got inspired by flatwings
and decievers
and sculpins
and mouse patterns
and muddlers
and deer hair poppers

so I put them all together.

Maybe it was all that snow making me think of large mouth bass, smallies, pike, sunnies.......

Beautiful Mr Schmidt, as usual. John, I've been tying on Tiemco 8089's for some freshwater stuff lately. I love these hooks, give em a look see. They look very similar to what you have pictured here. On Pete's comment, the colors look great, very darter like. Look at clousers darters, quite colorful. I've seen many colorful darters in the creek behind my house.

I watched a Chris Helm Video on deer hair spinning, and i understand it to a degree. Obviously Ineed to try it, and watch the video some more..

I took a ride to 2 stores today, and I could not find the hair described in the video.

JS, what type of hair do you use??

Thanks

thanks Guys

John I need to try some of those hooks, I am getting low on hooks. Always looking for good hooks to try.

Pete some of the bigger ones are to about 5"-6", probably a little longer then needed. I my get some short strikes but I have some beautiful and very long saddles to use.

Also for deer hair, your best bet is a good online fly shop. In fact, funny you mention Chris Helm, place an order with him through his store, he ships, great guy to talk to on the phone. I just purchased an order from him. He processes his own deer and also resells some. His latest resells is Nature's Spirit deer hair patches, quality spinning deer hair. I told him I wanted a huge patch of natural white/grey, he sent me a 6x12 patch from under the belly for 20 bucks that he processed himself. Its friggen huge. I also splurged and bought these beautiful german made scissors, Solinger, for 47 bucks. They cut deer hair like butter. I bought a few spools of Gel spun X2, that stuff is strong yet very fine.

Harry, I will tie a few with bald eagle and condor, and maybe do do birds, but my stocks are low, gotta pick up some more :D :p.

That's funny, seems to me in the video, he seemed to mention belly hair was not the best hair. The rump was. At least that is what I think I remember. He has an onlune catalog I will look at. I also have another co in St louis that i order from. We are not real bik on fly shops around here. We do have a great place in Taunton MA, but by the time I travel there, and pay tax, I might as well pay shipping, and have it come to my door.

I need saddle hackles too, but I cannot bring myself to part with the money for them

Pete

Yeah actually when I mentioned I wanted natural white deer Chris went on and on that there is not much on deers, its on the belly and its not the prime, but the grey and natural next to the white is good. I have used white belly before and like it but its shorter then other areas.

Yeah those saddles are really pricey but I got a couple loads from a guy on, I dare to say, another forum, for very good price, hint...

incorporate a small stinger hook in the hackle, riding point up. won't affect the fly, and will stick it to short-lippers... Hell you're already spinnin hair, what's a few more minutes to put on a stinger???:D

Pete, what are you looking for in saddles? Check out the whitewater fly shop southern Jersey. The owner, Greg Becker, is very helpful. They also carry discontinued whiting 100 pack saddle hackles in fresh water sizes for good prices. In addiion, they carry Whiting's "new" flatwing saddles, which are about $20.

RE hair, Chris Helm is the go to guy. Great to talk with and I don't think anyone knows more about hair. Give him a call. Which of his videos did you see? The consensus is that his best video to have is "all about hair" - Neil
