I thought I read about a conventional Penn reel that was easy to cast and was not prone to backlash.

I looked for the post but I could not find it. any help would be appreaciated.

Do you mean their Int. Baitcasters or maybe the 525MAG. The 525 is a fantastic casting reel. It does take some getting used to, it's very fast. Backlashes aren't too bad the Mag turned all the way up.
