does a fish need to be live to count as a record?

For example, if what was left weighed 20lbs more than the current record, would it be the new record?
A record fish cannot be mutilated in any way...same goes for tournament fish. Prop marks, shark bites, or anything along those lines disqualify the fish.

What was left of the Marlin weighted 1107 pounds.Estimates put the fish at about 1350-1420 pounds. The all tackle African record for Blacks is 1298 pounds.

Where in Africa was it caught and when?
I think the fish pictured was caught during the first week of November, 2009 or thereabouts. That's when I remember first hearing about it atleast. It was probably caught where the current African record Black came from, and one of the best Giant Black Marlin destinations in the world, Bazuruto (Mozambique) although I am not sure on this.

Bazuruto has been on my checklist of places to travel for awhile now...one day hopefully.

That thing is a monster. What is the current WR?
Current world record is 1560 and was killed off Cabo Blanco (Peru). It's been in the books for over half a century too...fifty some years and counting! Helluva fish...
