Hey guys I am debating a trip to Punta Cana in Feb. or March with the family. (free place to stay) Has anyone been and how is the fishing that time of year. I believe the better bill fishing is in the summer months but not sure and I am not only interested in bill fish other fishing info welcomed as well. Any info on Punta Cana for that matter would be a great help on making the decision of booking it or not.

We stayed at the RIU Royal palace. Beautiful, great food, wonderfull staff, half naked women on the beach, free booze, beer, nice massages on the nice beaches, had a great snorkel trip, but did not fish. two things about fishing. 1. there is a recent article in sportfishermean about Cap Cana. decent fleet, and decent fishing in the summer. Wahoo, Dollies etc the rest of the year. 2. Jose Webe just did a two show segment on Versus. they are creating an inshore fishing interest, but it appears to be a little early. decent tarpon & Jack fishing on spinning tackle. When I was there the Tysons Pride was there and absolutly was jacking the blue Marlin, and huge 130 lb yellowfin. this was in January. There is two primary marinas. Cap Cana, and Punta Cana marina. Good luck and have fun. I highly suggest it. I just came back from Antigua and the culture is 1000% nicer in DR. Here is the link to an amazing hotel we stayed at.

LOL...how many times have you been to DR? Gues we shouldn't go to SoCal b/c its connected to Mexico.

Fishing is solid, dorado up to 50#s, yellowfin tuners avg 90 but exceed 150#s and the blue ones can be very thick.

As prior post mentioned, Webe's special out of Cap Cana chasing blue marlin was sik.

Try Punta Cana (Cap Cana is a few clicks away) and you won't be dissapointed.

Tight Lines,

Frank

PS throw a half dozen black bart lures in your check in bag...and sleep in comfort.

Punta Cana is on the same Island as Haiti. It is on the other side of the Isle, but i would not go there now for free.

Disregard any comment about Punta Cana and Haiti being the same island...its a big island.

Went to a resort called Secrets Resorts in april 03. Was fairly new back then. It has changed names since then.
We had a blast. Its a 3rd world country so you'll see things your not used to. You would see the same in Aruba, parts of Mexico, etc. Just relax and enjoy your trip.

I booked an "open boat" trip thru the resort. 95$ a person. 5 hours. bottled water/soda/beer included.
They got outside along beaches/reefs and trolled single hooked ballys with handmade thread skirts...yellows and red were popular.
We raised 5 white's and hooked one (I was in the chair). came loose at boatside(60lb range) and glad it did b/c they were going to gaff it/keep it. The crew on the boat didnt speak any english. Had a pack of Mahi (5 fish in the 15-20lb range) come thru but no hook ups. Did troll some small feather around a reef and pulled a few snappers off the wrecks. for what I paid it was fine. I didnt expect much. I would do it again.

Thank You all for your info. Polarizer I would be staying at CapCana if I was to go a friend offered me his place to stay and have heard it is absolutely beautiful. I have heard a lot of mixed reports as far as fishing goes and think the inshore exploring would be something to look into although I would really like to target the Big yellows and Black Bills but from what I here its not the right time to target these species. Correct me if I am wrong please because if I am going to go offshore I would probably try and book a charter before going. Tahnks again to ALL!!!

Was there in Puna Cana in '03. I also stayed at Secrets, very nice place then. Found the fishing fleet old and dirty. Fished the Atlantic, offshore, conditions I was told were the norm (8-10' steep rollers). Fishing was slow. We were on a 6 pack charter. Never fished inshore or any structure. For my money go to Costa Rica, Pacific side. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

I was at Punta Cana 4 years ago. Stayed at Sunscape. Best all inclusive vaca I ever had. The property has changed hands since. There had been a major billfish tournament the middle of July and we were there first week of August. We did fish, boat was sad. About a 40' that hadn't seen much upkeep but it didn't sink. We trolled ballyhoo and did manage a small blue, which they kept, and a bunch of cuda. I think most of these places give you the tourist fishing trip. When I showed up in Mexico (pacific side) with my own gear, lures etc, it was a different story. They got serious and we caught 6 sails.
I would check at Cap Cana for a boat.

Thanks for calling me a moron. I gave my personal opinion. At the time of the post there was speculation of communicable disease spreading throught the island. There was also fear of up to 3 million people leaving the cities of Haiti to other parts of the island including the DR. As of now those fears are unfounded. I gave my opinion that traveling to an island that one of the largest natural disasters in modern history just took place would not be my first choice. I did not see at the time he was offered a place for free, in a secured resort. I should have read the thread a little better. Calling someone you never met over an opinion, in itself is a little moronic.

Just finished reading in Marlin Magazine that Rick Alverez is moving one of his tournaments from Venezuala to Cap Cana. Fishing cant be all that bad. To my point earlier, Tysons Pride was there. thats all you really need to know about the fishing. I agree with the other couple of comments. load up a couple of rigs in your bag and look for an american boat as well.
