I have done it on occasion but one time a 6 LB bluefish got tangled on the wire about 25 wraps had to hand line the fish and discard the wire line too many kinks.So now it is either 2 bunker spoons one on each side on an out rodder or a umbrella in combo.If I use the down riggers it is in the bay where I need to adjust the depth for what ever reason.Looking to avoid the school of hard knocks (for once).
For stripers, I usually troll 2 wire line set ups with umbrellas or spoons off both stern rod holders with out rodders. I'd like to add two more lines to my spread but am not confortable with the potential for tangling. In addition to wire lines at the stern, has anyone tried to use downriggers with umbrellas off the port and starboard forward cockpit rod holders? The theory looks good on paper, but...
