I got a buddy thats buying a preowned boat.
He wants to change the name.
Its got an OK name that he could live with.
I always thought it was bad luck to change the name.
He thinks it no big deal.

So whats the general oponion out there?
Good Luck or bad luck?

If its bad luck are there any rituals to please the boat gods?

Thanks
Rob

It's ok as long as you didn't give it the first name. The boat will be new to him, so he gets to name it.

Have The Same Problem, It Says In The Cerimony You Have To Write The Old Name In Side The Boat (hidden Of Course) Then Get 4 Good Friends And And A Lot Of Alcohol And Ask The Sea God To Accept Your New Name. Then Poor One Drink Over The Side Of The Boat And Start Drinking Until You Forget What The Old Name Was I Havent Got The New Name On The Boat So I Didnt Do It Yet

SeaTow's magazine says that no traces of the boat's prior name should be left on the vessel. (???) I'll have to look up the article later.

get a nice bottle of champagne.. Wheny ou rename it praise the sea gods and king neptune! this is what you got to do.. remove the entire name and everything that has something to do with the name..

then plunge it into the water and hit itwith a nice bottle!

Then drink up and party!!

Don't forget to slap a 7lb fluke or 20+ striper on the deck on the first trip. Let's the boat know what you have in store for it!

Changed the name on my first boat. Swore I would never do that again. Every boat after the second was changed. And I'm happy now!

Write the old name inside the bilge.
Drink a beer on her and have a chat with her. You'll be fine!

I renamed my 18' aluminum cc that I no longer have. I almost sank her the first time out. If my buddy wasn't with me to help me bail you'd still see an antenna sticking up in the middle of Great Bay. I will never rename a boat again, no matter how stupid the name on it is.

The name of the boat I bought is not very appealing to me. I am not changing the name no matter what! Tell him to be ready to call Sea Tow!

When I bought my Phoenix, the name was Mental D Fish & Sea. Delivery run down from Pt Pleasent blew out the exhaust riser and trashed the stbd engine. Changed the name after that. Following years were very good to us.

I heard that "legend" about renaming boats = bad luck too. I guess it's fine if your never going to fish on it with him.:D

Not much fishing with him.
They live on the boat up in Harvey Cedars.

Real Deal's a good enough fishing name for me to fish on that boat.:D
