I was listening to the MAFMC meeting and Pat Kurkle came on and announces that she agreed to raise the TAL to 3.something. I was so surprised that I missed the exact number.

How about that Thank Captain Adam, RFA, CaptTB and everyone else who helped push that thru.

They are not lifting the emergency closure that is in place now.

I am sure we will here more very soon.

NOAA Fisheries Service's Northeast Regional Administrator reviewed the
Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council's request for temporary
emergency rulemaking to implement an increase in the 2010 black sea bass
quota.

Through this action we will help prevent significant direct economic
loss for fishery participants and associated industries that would be
subject to lower commercial and recreational harvest levels. An
additional amount of black sea bass landings will also be able to be set
aside for research activities.

Through this temporary emergency rule, NOAA increases the 2010 black sea
bass
total allowable catch from 2.71 million lb to 4.5 million lb. After
deducting discards, the total allowable landings will increase from 2.3
million lb to 3.7 million lb.

To view the emergency rule as filed in the federal register today,

I don't understand. We can catch more fish in a shorter time frame? What difference does it make to have 25 fish and a 10 month closure, would not a 15 fish six month closure be better, or have we drawn a line in the sand?

I am pretty sure they will lengthen the season but I am not certain we will get mid April (after the closure) thru December. I hope I am wrong.

Yea but it's more than "what can we take"....I mean...keep fishing like that and you can say goodbye to this fishery too...

I just don't see the need to keep 25 fish, to me it's being greedy...I'm by far a PETA rep trust me but I just don't see the need...fishing has turned into such a "popular" sport the past 10 years...when I was a kid no kid thought fishing was really that cool in school...now everyone and their grandmother are out there...which is good...but the species are taking a pounding.

I hear youthat 25 is nice...but I think we are our own worst enemy most of the time in our greed to keep keep keep and keep...

I also understand what you mean about the $250 per head but you also have the chance to catch Blackfish(hopefully) while out there etc etc...

i wouldn't mind 15 fish limit.. but 25 is nice.. going on those offshore trips.. 250per man is a lot for 10 fish
I remembe catching 25 seabass "keepers" at a NWW "klinka klinka" bridge on way into Nwildwood with my dad and brother when we were 5 years old....fish were legal at whatever size they were..."pan fish" but you can't even catch a legal sea bass in back bays anymore...

So we go from an emergency closure to an extra 1.4 million pounds of allowable catch in a matter of 5 months. The truth is always somewhere in the middle I guess .

because 25 fish sells trips! When are the private boat owners or those with visions to one day be going to get it?!?! Despite all those you support across the industry, we don't have any real representation, and it is getting to be pretty damned sad!!! We need more interests to get into the game of lobbying rather than continuing to let it be monopolized by the interest that got us to where were at today...which is a mess in case you haven't noticed.

Not bad when the are 4-8lbs!
Plus a shot at some other stuff while out there! We've caught bluefish in Feb at the rockpile!
don't know how many people would pay 225-250 plus a tip for 10 fish... 22.00-25.00 per fish if you do that.. i have fished the rocks many many times.. fish range 2-7lbs not many 7lb fish.. the more structure a seabass has the more they will bread.. what we need to focus on is more homes for the seabass to live in :) make more reefs and more seabass will be around.. make deep water wrecks too not far from the rock piles.. give more areas for fish to make babies :)

i mean i do see a bluefish, sharks or other fish caught.. but not many.. i think 15 fish is plenty though... 10 is a little light per myself

As it stands right now the closure will remain in effect until April (I forget the exact April date)

Thursday the MAFMC will make its new recommendation to NMFS for the 2010 Sea Bass specs (expect something similar to what the ASMFC did last week, may 22 thru sept. 12 or thereabouts)

After that, NMFS will publish the proposed rule with, amongst other things, the recreational specifications for 2010.

It is hoped that before such time as the final rule is propagated that the wave 5 (Sept. and Oct.) and wave 6 (Nov. & Dec.) 2009 landings numbers will be in and we will know exactly what we landed, not just the projections that all this crap is based on. If (big if) the landings numbers come in lower than projected (they should seeing as how sea bass was closed for 3 of those last 4 months) then we would have even more room to open the season. Obviously if the landings numbers come in at or near the projections then nothing will change and if they come in higher than the projections we will be cut back from the current proposal of late may thru mid september.

Lots of unknowns at the moment, especially the landings numbers. They are having HUGE issues with the wave 5 numbers and have apparently hired an outside contractor to try and help "fix" the problem.

Time will tell, stay tuned. I was hoping to be in MD on Thursday for the council meeting on Sea Bass but if we get hammered with snow tomorrow I will be stuck digging out the boats. Hopefully Adam will be able to make it if I cannot (or even if I can!)

Hopefully I have explained how the regs will be changed (see the threads about the ASMFC meeting last week also) I will not debate the regs here, I am posting this info for informational purposes only.

Goodbye.
