I fished off the jetties and pier in OC on friday night, we used clams and bombers but nothing but skates. we did catch a 4 foot eel off the pier though, imagine the striper that got a hold of that bad boy.
Question though, both on the jetties and on the pier people were catching skates and just leaving them to die, i dont mean one or two either, there tens of them...all over the place.
this is distrubing to me, i usually fish off a boat so I am not used to this.
more than that, skates wing tips are pretty good, emeril even has a recipe, i dont know, seems like a terrible waste to me and a poor display from fisherman who are supposed to care about the fish and environment

In my experience, fishermen who kill skates, sandsharks, crackers etc., are "old school" and haven't learned that every living creature has a reason for being on this earth.

It's a shame they don't value the resources that we have.

No, its O.K.
Don't you know that the human being is the only animal that matters on this planet?
WE are what makes this planet so great!
Look how great we treat this planet. We deserve to kill. WE ARE GREAT!!!!!

I could turn this into a long rant but I bite my keyboard........

Humans really do suck.

It was just sick, there were at least twenty on the OC pier just lying there, thrown into piles just like the lettuce they took off there hooks.
We are all out there to catch fish, and to catch keepers at that, but i do not enjoy the death throws of my fish as it is converted from life to meat.
I actually feel bad, that is why I only keep what I will eat, the irony is that somewhere along the way this probably hurts the fish these guys are trying to catch by depleting there food source..
how can some people be so callous?

I always try my best to get the skates back on their way.

It's hard sometimes though, because if you don't throw them back far enough, they'll just keep washing up.

If you don't have enough respect to throw back the incidentals ( i.e. skates and sharks ), you shouldn't be on the beach.

Saw the same thing last May at bayside Longport rockpile. The soft sand on the beach on bay side was littered with dead skates. Everyone fishing at the time either couldn't or faked like they couldn't speak english. Disgrace. That said, wish they would open a market on spiney dogfish. Ain't no end to them things when water temps are in 50s.

Last year The LunchMan and I were in the rips and watched some fool whack a Spiney Doggie on the Gunwale and simply toss it back. His kids were there with him...nice thing to teach the next generation. A couple of weeks ago I saw a pair of skates washed up on the beach in Cape May, presumably killed by some near shore boaters I saw. The gulls were happy anyway.

I am a fish killing fool, but if I kill it, I eat it. If I am not going to eat it, it goes back swiftly, and with minimum handling and fuss.

People have to start respecting the resource even if that resource is not the target that day.

Last summer at the avalon fishing pier I saw 3 skates dried up on the side dock. I even saw a guy catch a 2' sand shark and leave it on the dock, pissed me off so I went down and put him back in the water. I get so pissed of at arrogant people. Skate and sand sharks are like the fresh water sun fish of the sea-fun to catch something when nothing is bitting or just fun to catch when your waiting for the tide to change. The only thing I do to skates is when I'm on my buddies boat-when I catch a skate I put it on my head (I wear a hat when I do this) it's called a skate hat-my friend laughs hiss @ss off, says I'm messed up takes a picture and then I let the little guy go back in the water. No harm done just a picture to show my friend, kids when they get older and when grand kids come along I'll show them-memory shots. If you aren't going to eat it, put it back in the water.

This guy I used to fish with gave all JunkFish a "headache" before returning them to see. Never liked that

The worst is when you see the Arnold Gulls tearing the skates apart on the side of a bank. I have seen them drag them out of the water in the winter.

the worst is when these idiots leave them on the rocks!!! at night stepping on a dead skate can be pretty slippery and dangerous! i just don't get it....

They are just like the guys who throw freshwater suckers or sunnies or any other fish that wasn't their intended target in the weeds and left to die. Then they wonder why access to fishing areas gets restricted.

but with a sunny in say a farm pond, they spawn 3 times a year as to the bass spawning 1 time per year...with all of the sunnies in the water, one the sunnies cant grow to their potential and either can the bass, harvesting or throwing tiny sunnies in the weeds is only good for a small farm pond fisherman

there will always be dopes who kill "junk"fish.but what they kill has no real effect on the species as a whole.for every dope that kills there are a hundred decent fishermen who throw them back.the worst thing about dead fish on beaches or jetties is that peta people use that against us.

No, I think the worst thing is that you kill a living animal for no reason other than to kill it.
