What lenght of fly rod would you use for small streams, creeks etc... I have a 9' Orvis but it seems a bit long for some of the local waters. Is 6'6" too small? Also - I would be building this myself.

Thanks

there are pros and cons of long vs. short.

on the brushy streams with tons of briar we have around here, I have the 6' 6" 3wt st croix

however, the advantage of a longer rod is the ability to stick the rod out for short line nymphing and dapping of dries that can be extremely effective in small streams.
