Split ring help

So I had a slit ring issue that cost us a good striper. The split ring had half opened...and the VMC 5/0 triple hook...Gone!

Slipping it onto lure hook was easy, but to fit the hook thru, I had to open split ring a little wider then it wanted to go. So there may have been the smallest of opening...it wasn't completely flush. In retrospect I should have redone w a new split ring.

Any suggestions on getting this right???

Oh, and I was using #8 split rings and vmc 5/0 6x fish fighter trebles on a stretch...

Owner hyper wire split rings!

You could bump up a size or two as well, a #10 will be much easier to work with on a thick gauge hook like that.

Always use the right tools for the job, and don't buy cheap ones, I have a big set of split ring pliers and a smaller one. If you use ones that bend the ring and it's not back to it's original shape it's no good, start over and do it right. Even with split ring pliers the smaller ones are a PIA to do but better then losing a fish.

Thanks, I think you are both right. A thinner hook might help...and smaller split ring pliers might actually be better for this application
