I fish it during the week days but stay away on weekends to many boats with no clue on how to fish the flats. Your fishing water 15 foot or less and the boat traffic puts the fish down so if you do try it get out before sun up and leave by 10 am and you might have luck or fish a couple hours before dark when most boats have left. I do good with 3/8 jig heads with 4 in. sassy shads or cut bait if you can find fresh herring at Herbs in Northeast Md. Good luck Aquasport.

We have a house on the flat and on the week-end it looks like the cm rips with the number of boats. Not only do you have the fishermen but the week-end pleasure cruisers too. If you do fish the flats take you time moving from place to place as there are some very low spots and if the dam is open who know what can be floating out on the flats. We go on the week days and it is still full of boats but have had a few good days. Two years ago we were by ourselves and have them hitting on top water plugs every cast.

I first fished for and caught stripers there about 30 years ago. Watch out for the shallow spots and the rocks. HAPPY DAYS.

I try to fish the flats every year. You are better off fishing the end on the season, the water early is typically dirty and cold. This year I'd do the same. Herbs is a great litle shop, I get my boat license there every year.

Hello Scott,
I used to live up there, grew up in Westbrook Park and ran with Primos-Secane-Westbrook Park Fire Co. for 17 years before moving down here to North East Md.

The "Flat's" is a great place to fish. I live 2 blocks from the Charlestown Marina where Barb and I keep our boat. We run a 24' Robalo that draws 2' of water at rest. We have fished the flats for 4 years now and know where we can go and where we can't.

You can "sneek"up on the flats from the southern end, as the bottom comes up gradually. The northern end comes up in a heartbeat. Need to know about that.

Actually, it's just like when I put over in Mispillion. I don't know where to fish on the bay and sometimes feel like I'm wasting my time. Knowing where to go helps out.

I would be happy to share my knowledge with any Barnner. Just ask...

Hints:
First light I find is the best for me.(6am to about 10am) Second would be sunset.( 5pm on). The only boat traffic is usually fishermen and mostly in the channel. If they are moving around on the flats, usually they are at idle.

Weekdays are best. You'll find "good" fishermen out there...Careful about what they do...Weekends you get "nuts" out there who don't know how to be courtous...We have all seen this...

VHF ch 68 and 78 secondary. Md. Fishing lic required.

We police ourselves and are happy to share info. But just like everything else, you have to watch what you say on the radio. There is about 40 sq. miles of "allowable" fishing area. You could get crowed in a heartbeat.

Don't let the notion that "all" the water out there is "skinny". If you know where you can go, the Susky Flats is an experience of a lifetime.

Barnners with questions can contact me anytime at [email protected]. I would be happy to help in any way I can...

See ya out there...

EDIT: The water here is in good shape. Although right now the dam at Conowingo is flowing hard, we feel it's only a temp thing. Not like last year when at this time we still had Ice on the bay...

Bottom fishing is ok...I jig 95% of the time...5" bass assins, Chartruse, Opening Night, with different weights...Rattletraps blu/silver...blk/silver 3/4 oz to 1 oz. depending on depth of water...I fish in mostly 3'...on the outside of the flats...

First timers should fish Sandy Point, Rocky Point, look for the boats...drift...go around the fleet to start your drift again...

Restrictions may be in effect around Spasuiti Island. (Aberdeen Prooving Grounds) WX channel 162.50...Be prepared to be inspected for safty gear...

Yes there is shore fishing. bloodworms seem to be best. Turkey Point (bottom of Md. Rt. 272) seems to be the spot. Harve de Grace and Red Point also are options. Parking ????

Charlestown Fishing pier also is a spot to try. Don't need a lic. at this location. (fed money thing). If you have a cast net, most times you can catch your bait. If not, Herbs Tackle shop is in town...

good luck...

I fish the flats all the weekends and a few days in the week as well. The fishing seems to be best as the water temps pick up usually from about the 2nd week of april on to the end of the season may 3rd. Those last few weeks are usually awesome for topwater action in the evening. big stillwaters usually account for some monster 40 pound plus fish. the season runs from march 15th thru May 3rd this year. I like to use 7" bass ***. and big 6-8 inch clouser minnows on my flyrod. This year if I can get them I am going to try and live bait some herring. If anyone need any further info let me know. the best time I have found is on a flodding tide at first light. lookout!
