Just got back today from a 2 day trip with Capt. Butch Rickey in Sanibel/Captiva whom I fished with back in January and had a blast. We fished hard all around Pine Island Sound with great weather and light winds. The first day I had 5 snook to 29" and two reds, one @ 30" and the other 25". Day 2 and the snook bite was even better. I had 7 to the boat with the biggest @ 30" and two more reds around 28". Between me and a friend of mine we caught 7 reds, 20 snook and numerous specks, one @4 Lbs. I lost at least a dozen more snook to oyster beds and mangroves. :( You really better be on your game when you fish for snook around any type of structure, as they have a propensity to hit like a train and run for anything they can find to cut you off. All fish were caught on live shiners. Here's a couple pics. Great trip overall!http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff279/striper13/ImportedPhotos00000.jpg?t=1207939786http://

Striper13, great pics! Looks like you had a great trip. Those Snook are a blast to catch on light tackle, but they sure do like getting into structure. Any tarpon showing up down there yet?

There were a few sightings, however it really hasn't gone off yet. I'll be in Islamorada in 3 weeks for a 2 day tarpon trip, and hopefully posting some more pics.;)

Nice fish!! I've been reading Capt. Butch Rickey's fishing reports for a couple of years. I was fishing Pine Island last month. Lots of wind. Got offshore one day. Caught trout, a redfish and a few snook in the sound. Did you catch the red fish by the mangroves?

SW Fla.

Great to read your report, I enjoy the back bay Fla fishing and just got back from a month down there.
I am making plans for next spring, probably a month again, most likely March/April timeframe.
If you don't mind sharing, where do you stay ? What is it that you like about a certain area ? or not like ?
If you want info on the Everglades City area, I can share some of my experiences.

Blackfin, I have a condo in Cape Coral I stay at as long as I'm not renting it. As for the area, I'm just getting to know the Pine Island Sound fishery and from what I've experienced there's a ton of great fishing in the entire sound. This time of year seems to be best, but I've caught fish in January as well. Hope to be living there part time in about 8 more years, so I'm taking plenty of mental notes right now from my guide.

C21, I'll be there from 5/6 thru 5/8 and fishing with a guide. I've never fished from land ,but I've seen people do well from land near any of the bridges, specifically the Bahia Honda bridge at milemarker 37. Good luck, the tarpon should be in there thick that time of year.

Butch is top notch. If you get a chance, make a trip for the end of May or June and Let him take you tarpon fishing. barhoppr charters or George "Hawkeye" (Hawkeye charters) Halper are the guides to use when fishing Pine Island area
