Just curious what set-ups everyone use's to catch Fluke from the beach? Curious about the rod length and also lure weight of the rods.

I have caught more Fluke this early fall season, while fishing for bass then ever before. It would be hard for me just to target Fluke when the Bass are around but I'm figuring more towards the summer season.

Thanks, Lami

Mike,

I have a 8' 6" conventional rod built on a steelhead rod blank, mated with a Calcutta 250 loaded with 20 lbs. Power Pro. It throws light bucktails to 1 oz. lures. I like 1/4 oz. bucktails with a mister twister tail, and a teaser set up. Summer time fun.

Lami, don't tell anyone but between you and I the secret to fantastic Fluke fishing in the surf is....... to wait until the day after the season closes. I think that the flounder mark that day on their calendars.

This year I caught (and released) more flounder then I ever have in the surf. T-Hexes and white buck tails.

Heck, one day every cast brought in a big ole clump of seaweed and I was still catching fluke.

Only problem is that it was fall .

7'2" shimano crucial, believe it throws 1/4-5/8, fast or X-fast action. This rod is the best rod I have fished with for light tackle jigging, it kicks the crap out of a gl2, greenwaters, st coix's premier series, and Id say it has an edge over GL3 and avids. Very solid backbone for the bottom say 1/3 of the rod, then it quickly tapers to a super light/sensitive tip. Ive got a stradic 2500 with 15lb braid, really love this rod for jigging weakfish, fluke, bass, and walleyes.

Early summer last year was some really awesome flukin, Was fishing jetties from central jersey and points south, and had some big number days (usually 15-25 fish fish per outing, most was probably a little over 35 fluke), with a handful of fish between 20"-24". Will be lookin for that 8lb doormat this year from the rocks, too many times this past year fishing the pocket of jetties, woud watch fluke follow the jig right up to the rocks.. i'd let it sink to the bottom and bam, fish on, awesome to watch in a foot of water. Also had a fluke just about jump out of the water as it whacked the hell out of my jig, right before I pulled it out of the water. Jetty flukin is one of my all time favorite kinds of fishing, cannot wait til june!

I am planning on getting a steelhead rod myself (though it'll be a spinning rod) for tossing bucktails. I think the extra length will give me a little extra distance to cover a decent amount of bottom. What's odd in that statement is that many fluke are caught in close to the waterline. I just like having the extra reach over the waves, come to think of it.

I use a 7'6 rod rated up to 2 oz and a Spheros 4000 with 20 lb braid. I have caught plenty using the same 7 footer spinner I use in the back too, a little Fenick freshwater rod rated to 1.5 oz and a 3000 Spheros loaded with 10 or 12 lb mono (skates aren't fun on that, however). Distance casting has not been an issue since most hit in the wash, as you've probably experienced. Plus, I try to go with the lightest bucktail I can get away with. Draggin works, but getting the sweep like you do with metals and shads for bass works just as well on fluke. Cast up current and let it swing down past you. If I do drag, I use a small trolling weight and a 2 ft. leader with a gulp shrimp on a snelled hook trailing behind. You can still get the sweep with that too, but it's better in rougher surf. Leave some for me!

Hey Russ,

I was thinking about using my 8.6 Surf and jetty rod for the fluke. I was also going to use my VS150or my Spheros 5000. Just wondering if I needed a longer rod for some extra distance?

E73,

I feel your pain. I pulled in a lot of keeper Fluke this past fall. One was a good 25" and fat. It killed me to watch the wave come and take him back out to sea. I looked at the guys next to me and said do you believe this.

Its Murphy's Law I guess, or just bad restrictions.

I use the lighter of my 2 bass set-ups. A 9 foot Airwave, 40# PP and Kalins jig-head with Gulp New Penny shrimp.

I've also had good luck with a AVA and teaser. If they'll hit it in the fall they'll hit it in the spring and summer. I just change up the teaser pattern to match what's around, that's all. I'm going to try the Gulp crabs this year as a teaser. What wouldn't eat a crab floating by real slow?

i killed the fluke from the surf this year my fav set up for them is a 8ft Airwave with my Shimano Sahara4000 10lb PP cast well before the first wave with a double Spro BT 1/2oz on top and 3/4-1oz on bottom tipped with Gulp....25lb test leader most of the fish hit right at your feet.....only downfall to the light lb test is when u hook into a striper:eek: lost a 20lb+ fish this year that way:eek:

8' St Croix with a 1/4 ounce kalin jig with either a new penny shrimp or pink or chartuese curly tail. If I got killies, I'll suspend one under a bobber and toss it out, they crush em!

Steelhead rods are the bees knees when fluking the surf. They're light, they're the right length (8-9 feet), and the right ones are good at throwing the small payloads (1/4-3/4 oz) that are so effective on flatties in the wash. They're pretty inexpensive, too, especially compared to saltwater rods. The only thing you have to remember is that most of these steelie rods have components that are not saltwater-grade, and you should therefore be very mindful of rinsing thoroughly after every trip.

I'm thinking about adding a Spheros 4000 to my arsenal for the Fluke with my 8.6 Lami-XS. I'm thinking since its lighter then the Spheros 5000 I already have, 12.3 to 19.6. The 4000 is actually closer to the weight of the VS150 I have been using, not that I'm comparing the two reels. :naughty: :D

I have used the Spheros reels for years off of the beach (Pre-VS) and they have never let me down for Bass, I can't see them working harder for Fluke. Can I get use to the bail again?

I'm thinking 20lb braid??
