Just got a new boat and am trying to decide on a trolling motor..Should I do a 12v with 2 batteries or a 24v setup ? Boat is a 16' Aluminum with a Merc 40..Total weight is 760-800 lbs with motor. I know I want a RiptideST with Ipilot so Im looking at either the 55lb or 80. Will be using this in both fresh and salt. I know you can never have too much power but do you guys think the 80 is overkill ?

No such thing as overkill. Id throw a 36v 112 on it. I dont see the point of having 2 batteries with a 12v setup. A 24v will last just as long as both of those batteries on a 12v, but youll have more power.

I don't recommend any of the power drive model motors (electronic steering). They're not as responsive and you don't have pinpoint control. You saltwater guys may use it in different applications than bass fishermen so I don't know. 80lb Thrust and 24v is the ideal motor IMO. It's not as loud as the 101's and still gives you the power and runtime of a 24v system without the use of a 3rd battery to weigh you down.
