Took my son and daughter out on Wednesday this week behind Avalon. Couldn't find any fresh sheddar- but we had some frozen(thanks to Mikey) and plenty of freshly caught grass shrimp.
We planned to get to the PigPen/Paddy's Hole area by 6am- but did not make it until 7:30am. I figured that due to our lateness- we wouldn't get on a good spot.
Well- when we got to the Pig Pen- we were the only boat there!!!! It's amazing. A few years ago there would have been dozens and dozens of boats in that area. It seemed like it was late November- almost eerie and cool.
Anyway- we fished in that spot for about an hour with the tide ripping in pretty good. Only caught a bunch of small sea bass! Moved to another spot behind SIC and caught much of the same. It's a real shame. A buddy of mine is going to try it tonite with live sheddars and peanuts. Hope it works for him. There was lots of bait everywhere and I thought I saw some mullet in the mix.
Ditto on what Esox said. My son and I were on the Miss Avalon on Wednsday 8/24. Lots of nice size croakers, plus quite a few borderline legal spike weakies mixed in. All caught on small pieces of surf clam. Water depth seemed to be about 23-25 feet.
Tom,
I used to live at that spot. BUT always sunup to an hr. after. The past 2 yrs. nada. Who knows TRhought crabbing(probably my favorite thing to do in that area) was fading away. This yr. has been very good. Again, who knows.
Hope this helped
