The offshore forcast looks questionable for the tourney, especially for moderate size boats (35' and smaller). When do you pull the plug?

You Don't Pull the Plug ...

The format, "Captain's Choice," implies that the weather call, once approved by a committee weather boat, rests with the captains of individual vessels.

I ran a small tournament this weekend and we extended the format to include this week to ensure that our contestants with smaller vessels had the opportunity to avoid tropical-storm force winds. SW 15-25 is fishable in a lot of larger vessels, although you're able to brine a 'hoo on the bow after a ride home from the Carteret back to LEI.

Fishing the Beach Haven Tournament

Southwest winds of 15 to 20 are forecast for Thursday with Friday and Saturday going to 15 to 25. Even smaller boats can handle those conditions if they use their heads certainly a 35 footer. If that 35 footer can't, consider getting another boat with a better hull.

Since the winds on Thursday and Friday are likely to be steady from the Southwest, run Southeasterly in the troughs to fish. You'll be able to come home in the troughs as well. Saturday is actually more iffy since the winds are supposed to shift from Southwest to the West or Northwest.

I hate getting bounced on the way home. Going out, I'll take a lot more.
