I always get more excited at one "BIG" fish off the beach over a bunch of shorts or just legals. It seems to me the satisfaction of catching a fish that is wise enough to get "BIG" while feeding inshore always gives me that sense of satisfaction, that I don't get catching a bunch of school fish. The BIG fish always leaves me with that shaking feeling where you gotta stop fishing for a moment to reflect that I don't get from a big fish, fishing from a boat.

definitely one big fish. quality over quantity. I used to jig bridges and sods in the fall and catch lots of fish to around 30". Gave that up and now stalk the rocks looking for fish in the 40"+ class.. taking the skunk occasionally is worth it for a few big fish a season. still like catching the smaller fish, but nothing like hearing the drag scream.

to me its a different kind of excitement. granted i havent gotten any BIG bass. but catching a fish every cast, every other cast gets your adrenaline going as long as your not over gunned. but bringing that slob up onto the sand or onto the deck...or into your lap via kayak is a whollleee different kind of excitement.

I can agree for the most part, when the fishing is stupid w schoolies chasing bait pods boat or beach, when its it cast, catch, and release. But when you got a cow ...that Rips drag two or three times after you get her close and is running up and down the beach or pulling across the tip of a jetty ...gets me every time...it takes a few minutes of "THANKYOUS" to the man up stairs for that thrill .

just being out there is enough excitment, the anticipation of the strike at any momment, seeing the first rays of sun peaking over the horizon, seeing the flick of a bunker then the swirl of a huge bass ahhhhhh come on spring hurry up

The natural progression of a surfcaster is to go larger, to sacrifice quantity for quality. Fishing SJ there are always those quick hit nights where you only have time to slam some dinks but you gotta fish hard and large while the big girls are in town.

a 30 lb'er mixed in with a bunch of schoolies:thumbsup:

"HEAVEN, I'm in HEAVEN"...........LOL:D Although thats never happened to me, usually the "BIG" one comes on the slow night when you question why your out there, the wind is Honking, the Waves are Crashing, The Currents Ripping, and you say to yourself, "why am I still out here."

When I'm bass fishing I'll take what i can get.
If it is one of those days where I'm nailing schoolies and barley legals on lures or bait than I'll be happy.
Or if it is one of those days where i catch that one big fish and thats it than I'll be happy.

Either way if i can go to the beach and catch fish I'll take that. Being able to get a trophy or being able to catch a fish for dinner is just extra.

Since I'm still trying to break 20 from the surf.... ONE big one would be nice :)

It will come Rob, maybe this spring, I fish almost exclusively at night Dusk and dawn, low light conditions especially around a "NEW" Moon outgoing tides ...That your best shot at a cow, off the beach or Jetty plugging big Dannys, weighted needles, BIG bucktails, deep divers, Big swim baits fished slow . Live Eels, herring, spot, bunker , ribbon worms or 3-4 inch Calico crabs as close as you can get to deep water.

Don't worry I'm waiting with you. Either 20 from the sand or boat I'm still trying to get that big bass. I have a good feeling about this year, especially from the surf because this year was the first year i caught my first bass on a lure from the beach. Got them on bait before but until this year i never got one from the surf on a lure until Montauk and the blitz on Downer ave happened.

I like being out on the yak and spending the night hooking into a bunch of schoolie size blues and bass. But having said that, I can't wait till the night that I hook into that big striper and it takes me along for a sleigh ride. I guess the exciting part is that with every cast you have no idea what's going to happen. The anticipation is exciting.
