The 2014 Yellowfin Tuna craziness has officially begun here in the Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama! Check out this video I took yesterday April 23rd, 2014 as we pulled up on a local commercial fisherman towing a log that was loaded with baitfish. It's a great trick used by tuna fisherman to attract big schools of Yellowfin Tuna. This time of year, here in the Gulf of Chiriquí, the spawning bait fish will congregate around floating logs....ommercial fisherman will find one and slowly tow it to an area where they know the Tunas are. When they finally meet up with the Tunas it is absolute mayhem!!

Nice Video Captain. We got to experience that very thing last year and it was insane. The tuna where jumping over the log and the small boats and big boats gave each other room to work the tuna. I remember the crew of the commercial boat cheering us on as we connected on the poppers, fisherman are fisherman.

Afterwards we traded them a half case of cold soda for a #25 pound sack of freshly caught shrimps!

I am super excited its going off down there, just a few more weeks!!!!

Thanks Dan. It seems that you guys are going to be here at just the right time! The tunas are just starting to turn their attentions to baitfish, away from the squid, and move up further north into the gulf here. Game on!! See you out there!

that was a cool video. What was the commercial boat doing that the Tuna were crushing his boat???
When the fishing gets really good at the Bank and word gets out, the commercial guys will either find or fell a tree and drag it out there with them. Its like FOD - they are fishing open water so I guess the bait fish use the tree or a big bush to hide under.

I've only seen it twice, but it was insane.

Yeah...Dan's right. This time of year the baitfish spawn here in the Gulf of Chiriquí and chances are if you find a log floating it'll be stacked with either blue runners, triggerfish, little amberjacks, little dorados, or bonitos. The commercial boats will find a log stacked with this bait and tow it for miles until they run into, or attract, the porpoises...who are running with the tunas. The tunas get into such a flurry they will be bouncing off the bottom of the hull of the boat! We have caught tunas in these frenzies that have fresh cuts from bouncing off the propellers of our boats!
