This is my home lake. Channel cats are the predominant species in BM. There are Flatheads, but they are few and far between. Of all the guys I know who fish the lake for cats, one Flathead was caught about 15lbs this year. Channel cat fishing is off this year from last. Smaller fish being caught on the standard baits. Livers, cut bait, etc. If you want the Flatheads, fish the Susque.
Here is my report from last night.
Left my house at 10:00, which was too early. When I arrived at my normal alewife spot, very little action. It really did not get going good until 11:00, so I had to mess around with bait for a while. Also, they seemed more unusually difficult to net last night than normal. My throws where all on point, but I was coming up with far less catches than normal. Water might be clearing a bit. Temp dropped about 5 degrees. Anyway, netted 10 healthy alewives and started fishing about 11:15. Was a little skeptical about what would happen because of the bright moon, but that would soon change. Had my first Wiper on with in 3 minutes of anchoring and it was a nice one. Guesstimate 12lbs. 5 minutes later another 7lber. And then a few minutes later a 3lb cat. 2 missed bites more than likely cats as well in about 15 minutes. Also, running low on bait. I only had three left in the tank, so I took 10 minutes and netted a few more. Decided to move about 50 yards, because I was hearing the Wipers all over the place. With in minutes at the next spot, two Wipers, both lost right at the boat. A smallmouth, and another cat. Fantastic fishing. I had stripers blowing up on bait 10 yards off my stern. Don't see that too often.
