Hey Capt! After some pointers I got from here, I went to Bayway this past weekend. I changed 6 plugs before I went out. The plugs that were in there looked a bit oil fouled.

Well... long story short, got her past the no wake area and opened her up. She FLEW! NO engine shaking. Got out into the bay about 2 miles and my alarm went off... lost a lot of power.

So I powered down, and everytime I bought her back up to 3000 RPM, the engine shake began. I looked at my alarm signal chart and it said "long alarm followed by loss of power = fuel problem"

Being a beginner, I figured it would be wise to have Tom look at it at the Marina.

The engine should still run ok. We look for a 15 lb. difference before we pull the head off. Did you ever shut the engine off after the horn came on. There were a few years where you have to shut the engine down for a very seconds to reset the system. If you do not shut it down you can idle all day and when you go to run it up it still stuck in slow. I would say your either running hot or a fuel problem. Check the antisiphon valve comming out of the fuel tank. This is the problem 99% of the times. A easy check is to install a 6 gallon tank up to the engine and see it the problem goes away. Then you know its a fuel problem.

Thanks MUCH barnaclebill! Being a first-time boat owner, this really has me worried.

While I was in the bay, and the the alarm sounded, at first I wondered what was going on. I never turned off the engine. It went off in a minute and never came back on. We headed back for the docks cause I didn't want to cause further damage.

Yes, the "legend" on the dash says it should be overheating or fuel problem. It didn't seem to overheat, but it was only a 2 mile trip back to the marina - so not really sure if I would have been seeing steam.

I'm a little disheartened because I bought it privately from an owner who had the power head totally rebuilt 2 years ago. I really hope I don't need a new engine. :(
