I was at a fish market and saw a striper for sale in the cold box? I asked the guy if he was aloud to sell striper and he said yes as hybred he can? I explained to him i thought it was illegal. I told that I fish for striper all around Ocean City and down in the bay and he said he would buy the striper at 4.00 a pound. I explained to him i wasnt a commercial fisherman that i do it for fun and then said isnt that illegal? He didnt seem to care much that it was illegal and even said if i new of anyone wanting to make a few extra dollars he would be interested in talking to them. I was blown away with what was coming out of this guys mouth because of all I have learned from people and other fishermen I couldnt believe this guy was actually propositioning me for fish. Are the laws that leanant or does this guy not have a clue?

Turn him in. Hopefully they would set him up. I saw striped bass for sale in a local chinese/japanese fish market on the Black Horse Pike in Turnersville. I said to the guy isnt it illegal to sell? He just kind of looked at me like who are you to ask. When I looked in the store a couple days later it was gone.

Yeah, I really doubt that the FG&W is in cahoots with some fish market owner. Face it, people do illegal things and sometimes they're pretty brash about it. I can't tell you how many times I've been approached by Asians at the Point jetty asking if they can buy any fish I have. I always have a little fun w/ them though. I tell them sure, they can buy everything in my cooler, and being that I'm a horrible fisherman, when they open the cooler it's always empty ;)

Is it really legal to sell hybrid stripers? If so, must they be caught in the salt? I never heard of hybrids caught in the salt. Does that happen? I can't imagine it is legal to sell hybrids caught in Spruce Run etc. I can't imagine it is legal to sell hybrids at all. They must be raised in a hatchery so...

I believe all hybrids are hatchery fish. Hybrid fish are usually sterile.

Well I will call the number thanks for the information. When it comes to the striped bass i know we all try to preserve the fish. I will give a call on the matter and bring it to the attention to the fish and game authority. I just was surprised how litte regard for the law the man has and does it happen more times then not up and down the coastal waters of NJ and if so maybe that is a problem that should be concidered when they point fingers at our catch limits and what not? I dont know alot about the laws on this fish but I do think that if theres markets so brassin and willing to disgaurd authority maybe the laws should be reinforced strictly? Maybe fish and game are grossly under staffed? Well thanks for the info all and good luck this fall .
