What's up with the insane amount of snot grass/slime in and around Great Bay this year?

Fished the north end of Brigantine for the last hour of outgoing this morning, the snot grass was really bad:mad:, couldn't take it any more so I packed it up and headed over to 34th street...like night and day.

Fished the until about 2PM, had one knock down that cut me clean. Fog cleared by mid morning, overall a nice day!

I believe its a form of algae I remember learning at one point. Remember that week of rain every day? It came after that.......Too much run-off perhaps? It wasn't bad before that week.
Sucks around our way. There are windows in the tide. Near the top, some spots, not easy to calculate. Good luck

Bingo.

People fertilize their lawns in spring. Runoff from all this rain goes down the storm drain into the bay. Any extra nutrients in the water, plus some sun which we're finally getting now, are enough to cause the runaway snot algae you're seeing. It usually clears once it dries a bit in June.

Schmeg

I have heard the term "schmeg" used for the condition described as snot grass by a mate
(Jerry) on the Bandit party boat. It seems to be a term used in Pt. Pleasant coming from
a Yiddish word for slime. Has anyone else heard of or uses that term to refer to the brown
algae found during the spring?
